4.0 out of 5 stars Enter the great Lord Soth, 4 Dec 1999

A book with Lord Soth as a central character should ensure a good fantasy read - and this is exactly what you get.Van Belcom has pieced together Soth's life most convincingly. The novel begins with Soth's elevation to the order of the Rose knights, there are some good battle scenes with ogres and I feel that the character of Caradoc comes across powerfully. The second half of the book charts Soth's fall from grace and into undeath. The story unfolds well as the noble knight succumbs to temptation by sleeping with Isolde, applies pressure on his wife to sire him an heir; then kills her and the offspring, covers up the murders and weds his mistress. I especially enjoyed the way in which Soth's loyal knights rescue him from the gallows and effectively interlink their destinies with his.The final pages where Soth fails in his quest to avert the cataclysm and where his keep and everyone in it is engulfed in flames is top rate. From noble knight to death knight.

2.0 out of 5 stars Average, 19 May 2006
By Marinos Tsimaris "Shirrack Dracko" (Guildford, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book was not as good as i expected. It was a bit tiring especialy with its lengthy descriptions with no reason at times. I remember at one time i read half a page and still didnt have a clue what he was talking about.
I guess he had to write something because the plot was already set and we already knew alot of information concerning Soth from other sources.
Soth was not as i imagined him to be but thats not why i am rating this book with 2 stars. He was basicaly a strong fighter (a knight of Solamnia only in title) with little wisdom and willpower.
The second part of this book was better than the first to my oppinion and it looks as if the writter was finaly getting the hang of things.
Another good aspect of it was the little scenes with the Kingpriest which broke the monotony of Soth and his life.

To sum it up, if i was you i would NOT get this book unless i wanted to own it for the sake of having a complete DragonLance publication collection.
