St. James has a lot of good advice here in a marketable "chicken soup" style presentation, but a major weakness is that the book seems slanted to the needs of recovering yuppies who have their loot already and can afford to slow down. I guess from a marketing standpoint that is a strength because those are the people who regularly buy books like this one. Voluntary simplicity is a different story for young people just starting out who haven't made enough money to qualify for the first home, or accumulated enough to even consider semi-retirement. For such people, the simple life often demands significant "sacrifices" such as conventional career success and social status. If the simplicity movement is to have any sort of long term credibility, there needs to be more books from authors other than the likes of St. James, people who have truly paid the economic price for the soul-enlarging blessings of simplicity.

Full of lots of ideas about how to simplify life, it's worth reading for those stressed and weighed down by today's fast living. It's not rocket science, but simply presents tips on the 'simple life' is, as well as what really matters, de-cluttering, changing our consumer habits, etc. It even provides wardrobe tips for men and women, although those for 'men' are extremely few. However, having read Elaine St James' book "50 Ways to Simplify Life" and wanting more tips, this book was not good value for money. If you want to spend half the amount and still get the same advice, buy only the "50 Ways..." book, which is concise and waffle-free. Ironically, the author argues against clutter and excess consumerism and yet churns out the same message in different book formats, thereby tricking me into buying another 'clutter-book' for my bookshelf!

I've read a couple of Elaine St. James' books, and this is my favorite. Lots of important reminders for creating more peace and joy through simplicity. I pick this book up when life gets too crazy. It's a good gift, too.
