4.0 out of 5 stars An original and deeply satisfying book, 10 Mar 2002
By Rachel Brimble (Wiltshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mother of Pearl (Paperback)
The character names in this book are extremely original and that in itself sparks your curiousity from the first page. The story itself focuses on two different families, black and white intertwined in the 1950's, but instead of the usual racial tension, this focusing on them helping each other in very unusual ways. The characters are very strong and stay with you long after finishing the book. It is a fair size book but it is no way a task to get through it.

2.0 out of 5 stars TOO WEIRD!, 6 Oct 2000
I have read and enjoyed most of Oprah's book list recommendations, but, like one of the other reveiwers, had I not been stuck on a plane for ten hours I'm not sure I would have kept with this. It's a bit too surrreal for my taste...I kept waiting fo the story to start. This novel did not live up to the hype on the cover.Having said that, at least it has prompted some lively debate and that can't be a bad thing.

1.0 out of 5 stars IS THERE A "NO STAR" OPTION, 3 Sep 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mother of Pearl (Hardcover)
I began reading, and got to about page 70 or so and was totally confused. So ... I began AGAIN ... and was still TOTALLY CONFUSED. I just didn't get it. Oprah was totally off the mark on this one ... I would not recommend to anyone unless confusion is there "thing".
