2.0 out of 5 stars TOO WEIRD!, 6 Oct 2000
I have read and enjoyed most of Oprah's book list recommendations, but, like one of the other reveiwers, had I not been stuck on a plane for ten hours I'm not sure I would have kept with this. It's a bit too surrreal for my taste...I kept waiting fo the story to start. This novel did not live up to the hype on the cover.Having said that, at least it has prompted some lively debate and that can't be a bad thing.

1.0 out of 5 stars IS THERE A "NO STAR" OPTION, 4 Sep 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mother of Pearl (Hardcover)
I began reading, and got to about page 70 or so and was totally confused. So ... I began AGAIN ... and was still TOTALLY CONFUSED. I just didn't get it. Oprah was totally off the mark on this one ... I would not recommend to anyone unless confusion is there "thing".

5.0 out of 5 stars A luxurious read, 27 Jul 2004
Melinda Haynes novel waited on my shelf for years until I got around to reading it and nearly kicked myself for having foregone the pleasure for as long as I did. This is a book with the makings of a classic novel of the American South. Her characters are both likeable and unusual. Beyond all else however, this is an author who crafts beautiful prose. There were sentences I went back and read over and over again, like poetry, hoping for them to sink in. It is the kind of writing that changes your relationship to words.
