Product Description

Product Description

Between 1963 and 1970, Paul McCartney sold 160 million albums throughout the world; co-authored with John Lennon twenty-five US and UK number one singles; recorded the first rock album with Rubber Soul and established the concept of rock-as-art with Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. As a member of the most important rock band ever, Paul McCartney compelled millions of kids to pick up electric guitars and others to burn vinyl. He helped usher in the Swinging Sixties, the Love Generation, rock n' roll's studio era, and left the world dumbfounded when the Fab Four called it quits in the early 70s. However, to this day McCartney remains one of the world's most beloved and respected musicians. McCartney is a tale of self-destruction and epic excess as well as creative genius and brilliant music. The Beatles' bloody in-fighting, the sex, the drugs, and McCartney's extraordinary marriages are revealed here in full. Yet, while the revelations will genuinely astound, this book remains a celebratory feast for millions of fans, capturing the glorious rush of the best songs and revealing the untold stories behind them. McCartney is the definitive biography, charting not only the pop legend, but the man and his era.

2.0 out of 5 stars Paul, Paul and more Paul, 20 May 2006
By P. Tomkins (london, england) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: McCartney (Hardcover)
Christopher Sandford's weighty tome runs to some four hundred pages and is an extremely thorough and comprehensively researched account of the life and times of Sir James Paul McCartney. It is crammed with splendid detail: "St. Petersburg (his 3000th gig) ": "Seattle's Coliseum 14.045 customers, 600 stretcher cases", as well as every single fiscal occurrence over McCartney's years. If it were reconstructed into a day by day diary of the best loved Beatle it would provide a must have book for all Beatles' completists. Unfortunately, it stops being a compelling book for a number of reasons. Mr Sandford's writing style is at best a little clunky: flowing purple prose abutting vernacular; mixing headlines with text and adding unhelpful bracketing in quotations. It is also a little jerky in its chronology. The journalism is of a "hear-say" nature with many quotations from McCartney aides, associates and family pals whose tainted view of history rings soundly of axe-grinding.
Obviously an ardent supporter of McCartney's talent, the writer blights the entire content by expounding the fatuous school playground John or Paul argument. Whose art is the greater? Thus, it would appear despite Paul's PR genius Lennon (or maybe Ono) has still managed to hoodwink us all into thinking John was the leader of The Beatles whereas after "Yesterday" no Beatle other than McCartney was worth his place in the band. This revisionist text is unnecessary and is based on personal opinion and taste rather than reality. Could Paul really be so altruistic, generously allowing credit to go elsewhere for the sake of the band?
We learn that Paul could shag for England, charm for the United Nations, is diligent, hard working, courteous, diplomatic, could knock out a tune at the drop of a hat, is close to a pound note: careful, not tight. Oh, and he wrote "Yesterday".
Despite the absolutely staggering amount of factual detail and depth of research the sad thing is that having trudged through to page 399 the reader really knows our Paulie no better than after glimpsing the cover.
This is a meringue of a biography.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read for beatles fans, 30 Mar 2006

I have read so many titles about the beatles and paul mccartney but liked this book and found it interesting how the author has run over some of the most well-known facts about Paul's public life as a beatle, a leader of wings and a solo artist. The familiar stories about the beatles, his wives and girlfriends, are brought together here by the author but interestingly looking at Paul's position in each case. If you want to understand why the beatles dissolved and why Paul had to break up his partnership with the other three then this will prove a remarkable read. Recommended!

3.0 out of 5 stars for those who like facts......lots and lots of facts...!, 7 Mar 2007
By kermit 333 (England UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: McCartney (Paperback)
Have to say I agree completely with the last reviewer - at the beginning of reading this book I found the author's attention to detail interesting but by the time I'd limped to the end my brain was bursting with every single tour McCartney has ever done and boy oh boy has he done loads! What was fascinating however was how Mr Sandford has portrayed the two sides of this modern icon; the cheery optimist and the arrogant superstar - no wonder he's a Gemini! Still my personal thoughts are that superstars become so full of their own importance that they feel they can act as they like -and treat people (us commoners) accordingly
