3.0 out of 5 stars Amusing but don't take too seriously, 23 Feb 2006
The Portland-Druce case is one of the most interesting of the scandals of the late 19th century, far more interesting than the much more famous Titchbourne claimant. However, this book is a novel masquerading as history. It is simply written, almost verging on the childish, and the characters are flat and two dimensional. Although there is an index there are no footnotes, no sources given, no bibliography. There are some careless errors, for example persistent references to Disraeli as a Jew. Disraeli was certainly of Jewish descent, but his father had converted to christianity before his birth and to describe him simply as a Jew is to over-simplify the situation.

As far as it goes it seems to be true, if over-blown and romanticised. And the ending is left sort-of open, if you still want to believe that the 5th Duke was also Thomas Charles Druce, you can, and if you don't there is plenty of material. The case could do with a more serious academic treatment.
