5.0 out of 5 stars Superb historical and personal acount of the crusades, 13 Aug 2001
By timmyboyg@hotmail.com (Hertfodshire, England) - See all my reviews
I have a keen interest in the crusades and thought i would try a fictional book for a change although i was sceptical wether anyone could pull of the combination of wonder and horror that was the crusades. Rivele quashed my fears instantly, this is a great book which re-creates the crusades perfectly. Rivele gives a deeply personal account of ones mans journey whilst also showing us the wider picture. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interset in the crusades and a great book to start you off as it also gives a great historical account of this amazing quest.

4.0 out of 5 stars great fiction, 2 Mar 1999
By A Customer
As a history buff, I found this book extremly engaging. I thought the book at first to be nonfiction, but it is not. Even as a work of fiction, I believe it gave a halfway decent picture of the times and what the soliders may have been feeling. I thought it was a great book!

4.0 out of 5 stars A rather enjoyable read, but conditional on fact/fiction?, 21 May 1998
By A Customer
I certainly enjoyed this book, but I must admit that I found the "fact or fiction" thing as distracting as other readers obviously have (it's refreshing to see it wasn't I alone who found myself a little bemused).

I give the book a '7' on the basis that whilst reading it, I believed it to be fact (let's face it, those footnotes really are convincing!) However, after seeing some of the anachronisms highlighted here by other reviewers, it's now hard to believe it *is* factual. And I'm not so sure anyone reading it and knowing it to be fiction would enjoy it as much.

Maybe Mr. Rivelle would like to put this confusion to rest? I for one will watch this space for his comments...

All the same, and afterthoughts aside, a rather enjoyable read.
