3.0 out of 5 stars Not "Killer Angels" but enjoyable all the same., 17 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Readers who like myself have read "Killer Angels" and are despararate to read more of Michael Shaara will be disappointed by this book but that is almost inevitable. If you want more of the stirring "historic fiction" genre the early death of the father means we have to rely on the admirable efforts of his son. This baseball novel has a very Hemingway-esque feel to it with its staccato dialog and abbreviated structure but it works at a readable level. A detailed knowledge of the game is not essential but it helps in places. Shaara certainly imbues his central character with enough human qualities to make the reader sympathetic which in itself means you are anxious to discover the conclusion of the story. Good but not great but still essential reading for fans of a great author with a tragically small output.
