5.0 out of 5 stars The Secrets Out - I Loved this Book!, 22 Mar 2007
By Sam "samueltyler" (Reading, Berkshire) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Secret Prey (Paperback)
Lucas Davenport is back in this decidedly different adventure for our gung-ho hero. The Chairman of a bank has just been shot dead during a hunting trip and it looks like murder. Could one of the four other executives on the trip be to blame? Davenport must use all of his detective skills to uncover a ruthless killer who will do anything to promote their own agenda.

This Davenport thriller is significantly alternative to the others I have read in the series as it is more of a whodunit. Usually Sandford informs us who the killer is at the beginning of the book and the enjoyment is from watching him get closer and closer to the killer. However in 'Secret Prey' we are left guessing till near the end. This is a fantastic way of adding to the tension and I felt anyone could have done it.

'Secret Prey' is probably the best of the Prey series I have read as Sandford has successfully added true mystery to his thrilling crime stories. I advise anyone to read this series and build up slowly to this book. It is always a joy when a long running collection of books continues to entertain and surprise.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fast-moving, but has a simple story-line, 21 Oct 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Secret Prey (Paperback)
This is basically a book about finding a murderer(s) - I won't be more descriptive because that may give too much away. (One of the previews of the book I had read identified the murderer(s) (by type) - as this is not given away in the book until after half-way, I think I was slightly disadvantaged and may have appreciated the book more had I not known.)

This book moves well from the opening pages and is reasonably well-written. Despite some good ingredients for a story-line, however, the plot is a bit thin, lacking complexities and the odd twist or two. The second half of the book is about nailing the confirmed suspect - although there is plenty of pace, most of it runs pretty predictably and fails to stimulate.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slow start, silly names, but becomes a real page-turner, 11 Jun 2004
By Jon Mack (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you sat at your Mac trying to write a novel, what names might you give your characters? If you sat there too long, you might name one "Del", and add "Capslock" as a surname. This is perhaps what Sandford has done, but if you can get away from the clunky names, chances are you'll find this an enjoyable book. At times a slow read, it picks up the pace in the second half - although it's not too difficult to guess "whodunit", the question remains how many more characters will be killed off, and why? Sandford leads the reader down a bit of a blind alley in the first few chapeters, but any more than that would give the story away...

Did not think this was the usual John Sandford book. Quite hard to get into. Definitely not a 'page turning' thriller.

Secret Prey never stops. From the murder in the first chapter we are introduced to several suspects and the story spins around them, keeping the cards close to Sandford's chest... Read more
