Product Description

Product Description

Known as the bald cowboy in "The Magnificent Seven" and the sexy, charismatic male lead in "The King and I", Yul Brynner was a Hollywood paragon of masculinity. Beyond his distinctive appearance and distinguished acting career was a life of intrigue and concocted tales surrounding his youth. Born Youl Bryner in Russia, he played gypsy guitar and worked as a trapeze clown until a severe injury motivated him to pursue his interest in theatre. This biography takes readers through Brynner's formative years in Russia, France and China and describes his journey from sweeping stages in Parisian theatres to a versatile career in theatre, television and film, reaching a stardom that began and ended with the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "The King and I". With accounts of his personal and professional successes and failures, the book includes his four marriages, his numerous and notorious affairs with such stars as Judy Garland, Joan Crawford and Ingrid Bergman, and his 1985 death from lung cancer. A filmography details his movies and plays, and appendices outline his work in documentaries, music and soundtracks, radio programs and television.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Double Man!?!?, 15 April 2008
By Peter Devaney "FifeFlyer" (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
For those scratching their heads over why this review would have a title like "The Double Man", well for any self respecting Brynner fan they will know that it was the title of the 1967 movie starring the illustrious Mr Brynner,

It's also very characteristic of Yul Brynner himself, a man of huge contradictions, no small descriptions for this gent! The latest bio to feature Yul and being fair there are only a handful, but this in no way belittles him, two previous bio's were Jhan Robbins, The Inscutable King and the more personal Man Who Would Be King by his son Rock(y) both of these were excellent retrospectives of Yul Brynner and as such would have made additional biographies a little repetitive and redundant,

Now several years(decades) have passed and a new shiny shoes biography has been published by Michelangelo Capua and McFarland & Co, well known for their excellent, albeit rather pricey, movie star and film series, slight difference here is that this book has not, to my knowledge, been offered in hardback format which is a little unusual,

The book itself ticks all the correct boxes, covering Yul's mysterious earlier life, a subject of much confusion mostly due to the conflicting reports given by Yul himself, his early pioneering work in television broadcasting and of course his stage work which would have him play a role which was grafted to him like a second skin for the rest of his life, the King of Siam, Yul's movie career is naturally given a good airing, with the massive triumphs and crushings lows associated with a man that the studios simply did not know on how to capatalise, Yul's private life and his marriages are detailed, along with his many humanatarian works, to his final dignified battle with cancer,

Mr Capua clearly is facinated by his subject and writes in a chatty and engaging manner, with the book clocking in at a lean 200 pages, it's thankfully free of the extraneous padding that frequently accompany film star bio's, an excellent and informative read on one of the most underated of actors, well recommended!
