5.0 out of 5 stars A worthy book for a much neglected actor, 22 Dec 2002
By Diane Clarke (Manchester, Lancs United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I had no idea until I just typed in the name Claude Rains as a random search that anyone had written a book about this most wonderful of actors. Once I realised that it existed I just had to have it. John T Soister and his collaborators have done a tremendous job, delivering a much needed record of Rains' life and more significantly his career. The book is heavily slanted to reviewing his film work and also his career in TV and on the stage. This is not a 'tell all' book revelling in juicy bits of gossip, revealingly Rains eschewed the Hollywood lifestyle for a farm in Pennsylvania and kept his personal life just that. So the writers, whether through necessity or out of respect, have decided not to delve too deeply into the private side of Rains' life. However, the book has been painstakingly put together and the love and admiration the author has for his subject is evident. As is so pithily pointed out, whilst the latest cinema stars are compared to the big screen stars of the golden era, no one has ever been described as 'the new Claude Rains.' But then no actor today (in my mind at least) has much an inimitable, velvet voice, or can play good and bad or morally ambiguous with such charm. From his big break starring role in The Invisible Man to his turns in Casablanca, Now Voyager and Notorious and the later years with a scene stealing turn in Lawrence of Arabia, Claude Rains still remains my favourite movie actor and it is to be hoped that this book will raise his profile and ensure that he receives the attention he so richly deserves.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Marvelouse insight, 14 Jun 2006
By K. Stawpert "Kathy108" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Dian's description sums up 'the book' (as it is called in the Claude Rains Universe) brilliantly. At the moment its the ONLY book written about this very talented and underated (in my opinion) man and actor. John Soister and co had a very difficult job putting such a book together as Mr Rains was such a private individual. It has been incredibly researched and the details on his 'filmography' very extensive, there are some great photograph too. Although the main biography is short it still gives you an insight into Claudes amazing life and wonderful personnality... as he was, truely amazing. At this very moment his only daughter Jessica is writing a biography on her father and its been along time coming. If your a claude fan, then get this book and get it fast as they are very hard to find (i had mine shipped in from the USA.)There has truley never been ANOTHER Claude Rains in the history of holywood... how could there be!
