Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

"It's funny how ideas are, in a lot of ways they're just like seeds. Both of them start real, real small and then ... woop, zoop, sloop ... before you can say Jack Robinson, they've gone and grown a lot bigger than you everthought they could." So figures scrappy 10-year-old philosopher Bud--"not Buddy"--Caldwell, an orphan on the run from abusive foster homes and Hoovervilles in 1930s Michigan. And the idea that's planted itself in his head is that Herman E. Calloway, stand-up bass player for the Dusky Devastators of the Depression, is his father.

Guided only by a flyer for one of Calloway's shows--a small, blue posterthat had mysteriously upset his mother shortly before she died--Bud setsoff to track down his supposed dad, a man he's never laid eyes on. And,being 10, Bud--not--Buddy gets into all sorts of trouble along the way, barely escaping a monster-infested woodshed, stealing a vampire's car andeven getting tricked into "busting slob with a real live girl." ChristopherPaul Curtis exhibits his skill for capturing the language and feel of anera and creates an authentic, touching, often hilarious voice in littleBud. (Ages 8 to 12) --Paul Hughes --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

Bud is on a journey. He has hit the road with one idea in mind - he wants to discover his father. He's not got a lot to go on - just a flyer for a jazz band and his very own Rules and Things for Having a Funner Life and Making a Better Liar Out of Yourself. Despite encounters with a car-driving vampire, a monster-infested woodshed and even a real live girl, Bud presses on towards a surprising discovery...

Readers will be instantly engaged by Bud's heartwarming, funny and fast-moving story in this award-winning novel set in 1930s America.

'Bud's fresh voice keeps the sentimentality to a minimum, and the story zips along in step with Bud's own panache' Horn Book

'The rich blend of tall tale, slapstick, sorrow, and sweetness has the wry, teasing warmth of family folklore' Booklist --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful, 19 Mar 2007
By Handmade Christmas Cards (Amber-Market.com) - See all my reviews
It is a valuable book dealing with such social issues as racism, homelessness, poverty while still keeping an optimistic tone of affectionate comedy. Bud goes through his difficult life of a foster child with an open mind, creating his list of survival rules. He is on a mission of finding his father...
Another good read for this age bracket (9 to 12) is a series of 4 books titled "Why Some Cats are Rascals." - Very inspiring and optimistic stories...

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Bud, Not Buddy (Paperback)
This American book is simply the most wonderful read that I have discovered for my two children. Set in depression-rocked America, it track the totally mesmerising adventures of Bud in the search for his father, a legendary (and itinerant) Jazz musician.

For the first time, a writer has absolutely gripped the soul of a 9 year old. There are passages that remind us, as parents, of the beautiful simplicity and naiivity of a childs mind.

Funny, sad, and occasionally frightening, it is a story that fills your heart, makes it beat more quickly, and at times, almost tears your heart out . My kids loved to hear it at bedtime, and I was always up there first, looking forwards to the next couple of Chapters.

Absolutely brilliant, and essential. You will not be disappointed.
