As a fan of both the character and writer I was a little sceptical if Kevin Smith could double as a film director and a comicbook writer. Well big Kev passes the test with flying colours as he serves up a near masterpiece showing at the same time great knowledge and affinity for our blind hero. The artwork by Quesada and Palmiotti is superb and they deserve a lot of credit for this great piece of work. Once again Daredevil hits the emotional roller- coaster as not just him,but the people he cares for most, get hurt.With guest appearnces from Spiderman,Doctor Strange and the Black Widow the story takes a twist from the supernatural to a case of warped revenge,but no Daredevil tale could be complete without the deadly assassin known as Bullseye. Never has he been portrayed better or more chilling as in this story and the actions he takes to get a job done are quite frightening. This is a superb read and it was made even better for me personally as the mastermind behind it all was a villian who was in the first comic I ever read.

This graphic novel is an essential read for fans of Daredevil and fans of Kevin (Clerks, Dogma) Smith. I just love everything about this book, the script, the artwork, the style, it's all faultless. The story is an ingenious tale which involves many twists and turns, there's a healthy about of action yet it also has a very mature and dark feel to it (proof that not all superhero comics are for kids). Kevin brings a lot of his common themes to this book, such as religion and the breakdown of relationships (as seen in many moving scenes in the early pages of the book) but he remains loyal to the marvel universe and makes many references to it. If you need any proof that Kevin Smith is a massive comic book fan then you have to read this just to see how he relishes the part of writing a super hero story and how he treats the character with the respect that a life long fan would have. Now, how about starting a petition to allow Kevin to write and direct the often promised Daredevil movie?

In a truly chilling tale with some EXCELLENT moments of Drama, Smith pushes Daredevil to his limits and beyond as the Man Without Fear faces a truly exceptional challenge.

The plot is well-written and the characters are all portrayed exceptionally well, with everything from Matt's love for Karen to his enduring friendship with Peter/Spider-Man effectively written to convey everything about how they interact and relate to each other; Matt's time with his mother is a particularly moving moment in its way, for all that it is so brief.

While the idea of Strange needing to summon MEPHISTO for information seems a bit excessive- surely the man had a few contacts on the OTHER side of the afterlife that he could use?-, it definitely made for a dramatic moment, while the confrontation with Bullseye and his casual elimianation of Karen perfectly reflected what makes his character so chilling an opponent.

And as for the villain...

Even when Daredevil openly derides Mysterio's plot, the lengths that the man so often dismissed as a second-stringer went to are highly effective, Smith's writing providing us with a keen insight into Mysterio's mentality at this low moment in his life as he gain a new appreciation for the lengths he is willing to go to simply to 'prove' himself.

If you're even a casual fan of Daredevil, you DEFINITELY need to read this!
