Product Description

Product Description

You could think of Setting Up LAMP as four books in one, but it′s actually something much more valuable: a single volume that presents the open–source technologies known collectively as LAMP—Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP—as tightly dovetailed components of today′s most affordable and effective platform for building dynamic web–based applications.

Each technology has uses outside of this context, of course, but within it they form something greater than the sum of their parts. This book shows you how to take full advantage of this power, walking you through all the steps required to lay your Linux foundation, install and configure your Apache web server, and then begin using PHP to access content stored in MySQL. Here are a few of the specific topics you′ll find covered inside:

  • Installing and configuring qmail with support for IMAP, POP3, SMTP, virtual domains, spam filtering, and antivirus
  • Managing system users and groups
  • Configuring your network
  • Creating a custom firewall script using IP tables
  • Recognizing when a system is in distress
  • Handling MySQL database replication
  • Configuring virtual domains
  • Writing a basic PHP script that integrates with MySQL

If you′re new to all of this, you′ll quickly get to where you need to be to start developing and deploying the higher–level pieces of your web application. Even if you have experience with one or all of these technologies, this book—including its quick–start installation appendix—is a resource you′ll want close by whenever you′re setting up or fine–tuning your LAMP system.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction but disappointing overall, 7 Jun 2007
By Mr. A. P. Hecquet - See all my reviews

Mr A. Moosa the first reviewer of this book is clearly in the pocket of the author. 'Setting up Lamp' is a very basic introduction into the 'concepts' of Linux, Apache, MSQL and PHP. Nothing more than a basic introduction to each concept and how to install them using Redhat linux. That's it. Nothing to do with them working together and no use of real work examples, in fact this book should be split into four separate leaflets offering a well written introduction to each. I feel the author promised his editor 350 pages on Lamp, after coming up with 20, decided to fill the rest with descriptions of Apache directives and the contents of .ini files which is material clearly for reference books and was almost certainly copied verbatim from the Internet.

This book will leave you feeling disappointed and cheated. My tip would be to download UBUNTU and go through the automatic LAMP installation. Then purchase a book specific to each of the L.A.M.P technologies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Its Great !!!!, 15 Jan 2007
By Mr. A. Moosa (UK) - See all my reviews

If you are looking for the absolute start point to go to the Linux Web Server world, then buy this book now.

I am a Microsoft systems administrator, used to manage enterprise networks using Microsoft Windows servers and familiar with ASP.Net and IIS technology for building Web Servers in Microsoft approach. I was looking for a book that shows the easiest and shortest way to start using Linux as a Web Server. I was so happy to introduce myself to the LAMP technology. This book is PERFECT if you know nothing about LAMP (linux + Apache + MySQL + PHP), and would like to know the step-by-step approach to it, far away from Microsoft.
Believe me, just buy this book, and start it, and in just a few days you will find yourself managing Linux servers, (adding users and groups, give permissions for users etc) as well as to be able to build your first Web Server using LAMP technology.
I bought this book a few days ago, and now I regret the time of my life that I spent on Microsoft stuff while there is in the world such a great technology called: LAMP!!!

YOu will never imagine how its just 375 pages, but will open all the doors of LAMP infront of you.

I should say many thanks for Eric Rosebrock and Eric Filson for their efforts to write this book.

However, my only concern is that this book needs to be updated to the latest versions of LAMP. It uses Linux Fedora Code 2, Apache 1.3 and PHP 4 - I just think if it was newer then it would be more interesting. But, this isn't a big issue for you if you want to understand how LAMP works anyway if you know nothing about any of these four titles of LAMP (Linux + Apache + MySQL + PHP). --- Thays why I gave 4 starts!

Stop doing more and more search about titles for LAMP, this is your real start, and take this advise from someone who spent "hours and hours" searching for a real start for this big world of LAMP.

After you finish this book, my advice is to go to buy these books:
1- Red Hat Linux Bible.
2- Apache 2 Bible.
3- PHP5 and MySQL Bible.

to go for deeper lever in all the four titles of LAMP.

Good luck, and hopefully I gave a good view about this book.
