Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
CCNA JumpStart offers a wide-reaching overview of the topics you will need to master to get a foothold in either the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Professional) or the CCDA (Cisco Certified Design Associate) study curricula. This entry point for networking neophytes fulfils an important need.

Basic networking concepts are explained in English instead of acronym-speak. The goal of the book is to lay a solid foundation in network technologies and it hits that mark. The text begins with a practical discussion of the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) Model that uses easy-to-follow diagrams to relate the standard's various layers to real world devices.

The book rapidly marches through the various topologies, standards and protocols with high-level discussions. A chapter entitled "Devices" introduces the reader to routers, hubs, switches, and other important pieces of networking equipment with clear overviews; however, the coverage of routing protocols--a topic essential for a Cisco oriented career--was lacking in specifics. The authors introduce key aspects of LAN design, managing a network, and connecting networks to the internet--this coverageg ives the reader a good taste of what a Cisco-related job may entail. --Stephen W. Plain, amazon.com --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good, basic introduction to internetworking., 15 May 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Cisco JumpStart (Paperback)
This is a very basic introduction to Cisco internetworking. I bought this book because I found the CCNA study guide to be too advanced for my limited experience. This book has definitely bridged the gap between no knowledge and sufficeint knowledge to attempt the CCNA study guide. However, it is very LAN based and does not really go into any kind of technical detail and offers only a glimpse of what Cisco equipment does. It is very well written but occasionally the style is slightly condescending - very simplistic diagrams and analogies. However, I would still happily reccommend this book to anyone wanting to get into internetworking who has absolutely no experience of, or exposure to, modern communications networks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excllent inroductory book!, 26 April 2004

(REAL NAME)
I am a CCNA Student here in Edinburgh and before we started our course, our tutor gave us a recommended reading list that included this book!
Of course, I bought that, not knowing so much about computer networks, andto be quite honest I am glad I did!
The book contains all the introductory material you'll need for computernetworks and they are being presented in a simple and easy-to-follow way!You don't need expert knowledge. After all, this book aims to introduceyou to the magical world of computer networks and help you in your firststeps and it does its work brilliantly!!!
It presents the theory behind computer networks, it focuses on standards, network media and devices, as well as gives a useful insight into LANs,WANs and network topologies!
Of course, this book on its own is not sufficient for a computer networkcourse, but having read that BEFORE starting Cisco classes, I was in theposition to quickly assimilate the information that the curriculum wasrefering to!
Buy it, read it and then refer to it whenever you want to refresh yourmemory!
EXCELLENT BOOK! A must have!
