Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Linux is a fine operating system--except for the new user who doesn't know one end of it from the other and doesn't have a clue about what to do and how to do it, having just migrated from Windows. It's a good job then that titles like Linux: I Didn't Know You Could Do That... are around to help the newbie get to grips with the do's and don'ts of tasks like installing sound drivers, playing music files, using your machine as a server or even connecting it to your Palm Pilot.

Ignore the image of the chimp on the cover (one thing beginners don't need is to be compared to a simian)--and the content is well worth the asking price. There are step-by-step guides to installing various software packages (from the provided CD), but to get the best out of the book, RedHat or a similar installation is a necessity as they're bundled up in the rpm format.

An increasing number of Linux books seem to be going for the "bigger is better" approach these days, but author Nicholas Wells has done a great job of condensing content into just under 300 pages. There's not too much waffle and plenty of useful diagrams and screengrabs throughout. For the newcomer who doesn't want to search through hundreds of pages of .How-tos, this is an excellent desktop volume which will have some of the trickier Linux add-ins up and running in no time. --Chris Russell --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

1.0 out of 5 stars If I wanted a software review I would have bought a magazine, 29 Mar 2000
By A Customer
Unlike my colleagues above, I was very disappointed with this book. I too am very familiar with Windows, but I really did not get the information I wanted to tell me how to do the same thing in Linux. The vast majority of this book is simply a review of software available for Linux. I knew that, it's the reason I use the OS!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book - especially for newbies, 26 Nov 1999
By A Customer
This book has answered so many of my prayers - I am a Linux newbie, but also an MCSE with 6 years experience with Windows NT. I found the book answered many of my "I know how to do this in Windows, how does Linux do it?" questions.

The book includes examples of how to make your Linux box do useful things - eg a proxy server or a fax server. The procedures are laid out clearly, even the command line syntax is included for many examples - so you really can't go wrong. The book also ships with a CD which contains software packages discussed in the book - so you don't even have to find the software for yourself.

A great book - I would definitely recommend it to any Linux newbies.

Mike Smith
