Amazon.co.uk Review
If you want to have just one Photoshop manual sitting by the computer,
Mastering Photoshop 6 fits the bill. It can be read both as a series of tutorials or in a non-linear fashion for quick troubleshooting, has thorough appendices of tools and features, and is written in a friendly, non-technical voice. It begins with 400 pages on basics (tools, selections, layers, paths, history, channels, etc.), and then does a good job of covering the complicated issue of colour management (colour working space, monitor profiles, gamma, etc.) and finishes off with more advanced techniques and working for the Web (albeit, a relatively short treatment--only 32 pages).
The appeal of sample images in a how-to book is fairly subjective. You can get an idea of the kind of images used in the book, as well as the general style of the writing and instruction by viewing a PDF of a sample chapter ("Advanced Layer Techniques") from the publisher's site www.sybex.com. (The complete table of contents can also be found here.) The final images in many projects lean a little too much towards excessive Photoshop "trickery." Occasionally, the "before" looks better than the "after." And, in general, the illustrations are too complex to clearly show off the effects and techniques applied to them.
That said, readers can always substitute their own artwork. It's more important that the text is clear and the lessons are easy to follow and, certainly, that's true here. The author's affable and personal tone makes this an excellent choice for beginners. He tells both the hows and the whys of techniques, and shows optional methods and potential pitfalls. It's like having a close friend show you the ropes. And the book is useful for bringing more experienced users up to speed, whether it's gaps in their Photoshop knowledge or new features in version 6. There's a lengthy index and a modular organisation, where projects are broken down into self-contained mini-techniques that can be read and/or performed on their own, that makes it good for quick referencing. --Angelynn Grant
