4.0 out of 5 stars Not a Lanugage Reference., 4 Dec 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Mastering JavaScript (Paperback)

The most impressive aspect of this book is its scope. If its part of the JavaScript 1.2 implementation, its in this book. JSSS, Livewire, vrml, Accessing Plug-ins and JAVA applets, etc...

I would be lying to say that I had no programming experience when I picked up this book. But I would also be lying to say that I could program before I picked up this book. This is a great How-to book on both learning JavaScript as well as giving you a handle on a lot of basic programming concepts.

If you understand the concepts presented in this book, Navigator 4 dhtml and JavaScript will be child's play. Not to mention that it introduces you to a 'whole new world' by giving you the skinny on why many things work the way they do.

This book has one major shortcoming that keeps it from becoming my only JavaScript Reference. That is, it is no language reference. The only way to find what you want is to read.

There is a 'language reference' in the back of the book, but it is a poor, undocumented one. Once you've read and grasped the concepts herein, the usefulness of this book depreciates immediately. The plus being, that this book has over 1000 pages of stuff to grasp and Learning JavaScript is just the first 300 pages or so. Then you get information on many bonus topics as they tie in to JavaScript.

My verdict: If you're looking for the definitive How-to book on JavaScript and want to understand the language, This book is a wise first-step.

Then go out and find a Language Reference. [I suggest: 'JavaScript, The definitive guide' by Flanagan. Not as up-to date, but immaculately documented.]

Happy JavaScripting!

1.0 out of 5 stars Impressive in scope but couldn't recommend it for beginners, 16 Feb 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Mastering JavaScript (Paperback)
I bought this book with the intention of using it as my single, definitive reference source for all matters relating to Javascript. After struggling with it for 8 MONTHS, I have some positive and more negative comments. My positive coments:

The author is undoubtedly a highly experienced programmer and provides plenty of examples in the text.Once you have mastered the basics, you'll find this book a useful reference.

My negative comments:

I couldn't 'master the basics' using this text! I feel that the authors writing style is rather dry and is reminiscent of the language of a dull academic. The style won't be enjoyed by beginners. A far more user-friendly style is evident in the Javascript for Communicator book by Peter Kent. As I progressed through the book, I increasingly felt that the author had geared the book towards people with a reasonable to good knowledge of programming concepts. Additionally, I thought that some of the examples were too long and/or complicated for beginners. In some cases, I couldn't see the point of certain examples.

In the end, I had to admit defeat and effectively gave up on the book :-( I certainly couldn't recommend it to someone with no programming language experience as a starter text.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent "Learn JavaScript" book, 6 Jul 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mastering JavaScript (Paperback)
Well-written, easy to follow, and comprehensive. I enjoyed reading this one from cover to cover, and learned a ton of stuff: JavaScript philosophy, operators, statements, control structures, pre-defined objects & methods, plug-ins, layers, even server-side Javascript - all good stuff. Newbies: get "HTML 4.0 How-To" first, then this book, then "JavaScript: The Definitive Guide" by O'Reilly for a desk reference.
