Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Of all areas of interest in computer hardware and software technologies in recent years, few can have had as much attention as those that embrace the Internet. While people have become increasingly familiar with "surfing the net", now many have also discovered that it is not too difficult a task to design and build their own Web pages.

HTML Complete, published by Sybex, is a unique 1,000 page digest from 10 books by various authors about using Hypertext Markup Language, the bricks and mortar of Web page construction. Not that this book will turn you into a Master Builder overnight, but it will give you a thorough apprenticeship into the fundamentals of Web page design in an easy to read manner with lots of practical examples. The main sections of the book provide a steady-paced tutorial from the basics of HTML and site navigation through to the more advanced extensions where you can learn the first principles of Perl, DHTML, JavaScript and XML. In addition, an extensive 300 page appendix covers the syntax of using HTML tags and attributes, cascading style sheets, JavaScript, and HTML colours and character codes.

However, HTML Complete isn't just about cutting the code behind the pages, it also provides some valuable insights into good visual design, teaching you what works and what doesn't. Aimed at users of all levels, the broad brush approach of HTML Complete may leave the more experienced user wanting more. The advantage of this taster compilation is that it pulls back the curtains to give a peek into what is possible and lays some solid foundations upon which to build further. --Peter Lunn --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, both in content and price, 31 Mar 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: HTML Complete (Paperback)
I was in the bookstore just looking around, not really planning on buying anything, and this just lept out at me. I have experience in HTML, but was using older books as reference. A quick look into the first few chapters of this book and I was hooked and bought it. It is what I consider to be the most complete and up-to-date reference on the subject of web programming, including HTML4, DHTML Java, Javascript, CGI and PERL scripting, cascading style sheets. It also teaches the basics to all of these concepts, assuming no previous knowledge, prefect for anyone. The Appendix is especially great as it covers EVERY sinlge tag and attribute for Win95/98 and IE/Netscape. It is clear, concise and more importantly, NOT dry and technical, but interesting to read as it is compiled from wide sources, and has practical example to guid you. Excellent job Sybex!!

4.0 out of 5 stars easy enough for beginners ,tough enough for experts, 8 Dec 2001
By A Customer
This is a book I would recommind to almost anyone learning HTM. The beauty of this book is that, what ever level you are at, you won;t be spoken down to. The instructional material is specific enough to give you an "end product". and open enough to get you thinking.
My only gripe with this book it that, being the shape it is , it's slightly onweildy. The appendices at the end of the book (500 pages) will prove VERY usefull if you get heavy on web design.

one last thing. don't assume the web addresses are as stated within the text. times change fast on the web. so keep your eyes peeled. Actually, I wouldn't be too quick to call that a negative criticism either, for therein lies a hidden lesson. Maintain your site.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best reference books I have bought..., 14 Jan 2000

This review is from: HTML Complete (Paperback)
There are a lot of fairly good computer books on the market, and a fair proportion claim to tell you all you need to know about HTML. This one is different - it does! Whether you are already proficient at coding or a complete beginner who's keen to learn, you'll find all you need here. The introductory sections are clear and concise, with plenty of room left for a meaty reference section covering HTML, Java, Javascript. What is great about this book is that it not only gives you the purely technical references, like which attributes can be put with which tags - but it also goes into page design techniques, colour theory, pros and cons of various scripting languages - and that's just a small proportion of the gems of info. in this book. I have it permanently next to my computer as a superb reference work but also as a well-written book that is good to read. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. A worthy addition to any technical bookshelf.
