Amazon.co.uk Review
Sun recently changed the Java certification exam, adding questions on a lot of new material. As such, the original version of this book just won't cut it. Among the many updates, the authors have added a 50-question exam, 150 questions on the CD, more coverage of the developer's exam and a reference section on the certification alliance.

Basically, Complete Java 2 Certification Study Guide is for those who already know Java but want the kind of proof that brings in the big bucks. You want Sun itself to vouch for your competence next time you walk into an interview.

The bulk of the text is pedantic description of every aspect of the Java language. It describes Java in complete and mind-numbing detail because, in the exam, you can be asked anything about it. The authors test your dedication to passing the exam by doing their best to put you to sleep. Those remaining awake at the end of each chapter get a test on its content. These take the same form as they will in the actual exam, mostly multi-choice questions based on Java code fragments, though more than one answer can be correct. Of course, the real exam is on-screen.

Crossword fanatics solve crosswords set by familiar authors faster, having learned how their minds work, so it is worth noting that Simon Roberts headed up the team that wrote the Java Certification exam. It seems likely, therefore, that if you can handle the questions set here you will do well in the real exam. No other Java certification guide can make the same claim. Buy it, study it and pass. --Steve Patient --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Amazon.co.uk Review
Sun Java certification is no picnic, so a thorough study guide is essential. Look no farther than The Complete Java 2 Certification Study Guide for formal, structured preparation. This bulky title offers comprehensive coverage of the objectives you must master to pass both the Programmer's Exam and the more demanding Developer's Exam.

Written by a trio of Sun Java course instructors, this book uses a straightforward bottom-up approach, starting with core syntax of Java and moving into progressively graphical and more sophisticated aspects of development. The familiar textbook style makes the title very suitable for self-paced study even if you're not shooting for certification.

Each chapter includes a test and the answers are not just merely stated but explained. The authors use code snippets that are not overwhelming in length to keep their readers focused on the concept at hand. A large portion of the rear of the book is devoted to a Java 2 API reference and the CD-ROM features a test limit to help you get psyched for the big exam. If you've got the time and dedication to master the material, this fine guide is all you need to get Sun's stamp of approval as a developer. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: Java language fundamentals, objects and classes, event management, components, graphical user interfaces, database integration, thread management and Remote Method Invocation (RMI).

5.0 out of 5 stars Book does exactly what it says on the cover, 17 May 2001
I'm a little puzzled that people have complained that this book is no good for learning java. Given the title what did they expect? This book is not designed to teach you java, it is to help you pass the two Sun java certification exams and this it does in a clear and concise manner, unlike several other certification guides which are garbled, unclear and obviously written in a hurry. The book is large, but that is mainly because it covers both Programmers and the more in depth Developer exam, and although it could have been made smaller by squeezing more words onto every page I found the uncluttered page layouts much more conducive to absorbing the information. I would recommend this book to anyone taking the Sun Programmer exam (I haven't sat the developer one yet)

5.0 out of 5 stars Note the title of the book, 12 Jul 2001
By A Customer
Please note the title of the book. I noticed a number of other reviews moaning about not being able to learn how to program Java from this book. This book isn't about learning to program in Java, it's the study guide for passing the Java 2 Certification exam. I don't see how any of you people that have written reviews like this can review a book and moan that it's not taught you how to program Java when thats not what it's designed for. Pay more attention to what you're buying and buy the appropriate book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book with a lot of useful tips, 23 April 2002
This is generally a good study guide for those interested in becoming Java certified programmers. The book is full of hints and tips, give or take a few typos. The more experienced programmers can skip some of the chapters(control flow is one of them). I am sure there are better books on the market so shop wisely.

The book is no good at all. I've found few mistakes. Questions on the back of every chapter are far too easy and real exam is tough. I would not recommend buying. Read more
