This promised to be a valuable resource for a VB developer. The descriptions of patterns and their uses are very good. However, the book really disappoints in the examples, and the source code. Some of the suggested applications are plain wrong: for example, it suggests decorating an ADO.Connection object, inheriting its interface. This is not actually possible. Also, the source code is confusingly laid out, and unclear. Some of the patterns' UML diagrams do not correlate with the explanation. This is a good book to expalin patterns, and give you a starting point for using them in VB, but you may find you'll have to work out how to use them in VB yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent insight into Visual Basic's implementation of OO, 7 Nov 2000

This is definitely NOT a book for beginners in VB or for anyone not invloved with full VB6 O-O development. Theres a lot of theory here and an instant assumption that you've got to grips with VB's flavour of OO, such as the implements statement, abstract classes and custom events. It also makes things a lot clearer if you have a good understanding og UML notation, in particular the class diagram. Having said that, this is an excellent book, even considering the pre-requisites, although to be fair a discussion at this level would be impossible without the pre-requisites. The best thing about this is the "classic" OO solutions in VB to situations all developers must find familiar. Its a book i would definitely recommend. I found that UML Distilled was the perfect preparation (as the author suggests) for this excellent book.
