1.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reference? I don't think so..., 26 April 2001
By A Customer
I bought this book while in the US as, compared to others available in the bookshop, it seemed to cover everything I wanted to know. How I wish I'd spent more time browsing. If you know *anything* about *any* programming language or "the internet" the first hundred pages can be thrown away (and incidentally, the binding is so bad, they might just fall out by themselves). The rest of the book is taken up with pages of code which you won't bother typing in (especially when you find that it doesn't actually work), and frivolous examples for which Javascript is entirely unsuited (Chapter 13 is a case in point, pages and pages of code to develop an online catalogue? no thanks).

Add to that the fact that there are references to appendices which bizarrely don't exist in the book, only online (publishing deadlines evidently more important than actually finishing the book), and that the downloadable code samples frequently don't work, and you have a superb contender for "Table leg wedge of the year".

Avoid at all costs...

1.0 out of 5 stars I still curse myself for buying this book., 29 Oct 2000
Over the years I have bought several books on programming languages but I have never encountered such an incomprehensible book as this one. When I read a book, it takes me about one day reading to figure out the basics of the language and to memorise the structure of the book (where to find what).

Unfortunately, with this book, this is impossible to do. After several readings, I still am unable to grasp its structure.

One of the reasons for this is the fact that the book was never finished. Being 895 pages thick, you would expect it to be complete. However, most of the reference material is located on the accompanying website which, if you buy a book, is totally absurd.

This experience has taught me a lesson. Never buy a book without reading the reviews of other readers (I bought the book in a shop, on impulse).

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!, 30 May 1999
By A Customer
This book contains invalid code samples. I copied one of it's codes exactly and tried to use it with Internet Explorer 5, Netscape Communicator 4.6, and Netscape Navigator 3. They all gave me javascript errors. It spends too much time on talking about Javascript code and it's origins and not nearly enough time on HOW to code. I strongly suggest that you don't buy this.

Yes, I have read the other reviews but I have to say, I strongly disagree (bearing in mind that I have not ran any of the samples provided from the Jaworski web site!). Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Heavy book, light weight material - irrelevant
This book is big and fat and you'd think that this meant there was loads of useful stuff. Instead, the author focusses on developing fairly useless web applications in Javascript,... Read more
