5.0 out of 5 stars Detailed and thorough, 7 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Since the other reviews were written before the 2002 version of this book, and definitely don't apply (for example, in this edition there are no pages devoted to installation) it deserves an up to date review.

As the comments on Amazon USA mention, this is much more a book about Rose than UML. If you are looking for a (sometimes excruciatingly) detailed guide to Rational Rose the tool, then this is your book. The usual introductory and context material start the book before we get to the real meat i.e. how to coax Rose into creating the different UML diagrams (9 chapters)and how to use them to generate C++, Java, VB and XML code (7 chapters). It finishes with sections on data and web modelling and an appendix called "Getting started with UML".

I haven't read the previous editions but perhaps a prior reviewer confuses filling a page quota with thoroughness and attention to detail. As the authors explicitly say in the introduction, 'This book does not need to be read sequentially'. Each chapter thus stands alone which necessitates a certain amount of repetition. What this also means is that I can dip in via the excellent index and still understand what is being explained.

As a detailed handbook to Rational Rose I give this 5 stars however if you are looking for a book on how to model with UML, or how to use it in a methodology e.g. RUP check out Coad, Arlow, Eeles or similar.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just padding, 27 Dec 2001

This is one of those books that has a page quota to fill and little in the way of content. I was astonished that it actually takes twenty pages to show how to install the product, with a picture of each installation screen - I would have thought that people using UML would know something about computers. The book states the obvious throughout and takes every opportunity to add unnecessary tables, screen shots and source code (even admitting that the output in one case is exactly the same as in another, but still showing it!).

In summary, there's nothing in here that you won't be able to work out for yourself or get for free from the internet.

1.0 out of 5 stars It's just a reference of Rational Rose., 31 Mar 2000
By A Customer
There is no 'Mastering' information in UML at all. There are two sample projects, which only appear in the exercises. Don't expect any explanation on visual modelling, as well as UML. The book just let you know what the Rational Rose can do. It's even worse than the data sheet from Rational Software, which is free for downloading.
