Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Oracle is the definitive enterprise database and Visual Basic is ubiquitous in commercial programming. This book bridges the gap to Oracle for commercial VB programmers.

It's a large book divided into two major sections on Oracle from a VB programmer's point of view and two major sections on VB from Oracle's end. Within these are detailed chapters on every aspect of Oracle.

You start with the basics of Oracle: architecture, database creation, design and implementation. In the second section you're introduced to queries, PL/SQL and stored procedures. In the third part you look at the client side, Oracle access using VB, VB design issues and Data Access Objects while the last section tackles Remote Data Objects, ODBCDirect, ActiveX Data Objects and Oracle Objects for OLE.

There are lots of Oracle code examples but, because you're a VB programmer with commercial experience, the amount of VB code is vanishingly small. However, you will gain practical as well as theoretical experience in the latest remote database handling features of VB including RDO in VB 6.0 as well as Oracle's OO4O.

If the author's purpose is to provide a thorough grasp of how Oracle operates behind the scenes from a VB users perspective he succeeds brilliantly. If you plan to move into an Oracle environment take this book with you. --Steve Patient

1.0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS BOOK, 11 Aug 2000
By ian.rowland@gasops.co.uk (Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, UK) - See all my reviews
The book is called 'Oracle Programming With Visual Basic'. My reason for buying the book? I want to learn how to program Oracle with Visual Basic. Yet the first 320+ pages has nothing to do with programming Oracle with Visual Basic! These pages describe how to create, administer, design and implement an Oracle database. If I wanted to know about this side of Oracle, there are much better dedicated books available.

Almost 50 pages are dedicated to an introduction to SQL - not Oracle SQL but ANSI SQL! Again, if I wanted to know about how to use SQL I would have bought a book on the subject.

I am interested in progamming Oracle with Visual Basic. It is not until page 405 that you encounter your first bit of VB code. And what does this code do - anything to do with Oracle programming with Visual Basic? No! It is a sub that describes how to connect to an Access database. AAARGH!

The book then describes wholly inappropriate technologies for accessing Oracle i.e. DAO (designed specifically with Jet in mind) - a whole chapter is dedicated to DAO (almost 70 pages) and RDO (why advocate using an old technology when a free, more mature, technology exists i.e. ADO! ).

The ultimate insult in this book, which is categorised an 'Intermediate/Advanced' programming book, starts on page 451 - 'Error Handling'. This describes how to use Visual Basic's error handling functionality and even includes detailed descriptions of 'On Error Goto Label', 'On Error Resume Next' and 'On Error Goto 0'!

If you want to learn "Oracle Programming With Visual Basic" don't get this book!...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book - Problems with ADO to Oracle w/ Stored Procedure, 27 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This is a great book and has been a lifesaver for our first project connecting Visual Basic to Oracle. However, the section on using ADO to return a recordset from a stored procedure doesn't appear to work. We gave up and went to oo4o. Other than that it is a wonderful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book - Covers/Compares ADO RDO, 16 Nov 1998
By A Customer
As a "junior developer", I have been given my biggest VB project yet. I was a little nervous when we decided to use ORACLE for the DBMS, since I had never worked with ORACLE before. I needed a reference that specifically covered VB programming with ORACLE. This book is EXACTLY what I needed, and the only one I could find. Half of the book gives an overview of ORACLE (designed for developers who haven't worked with ORACLE), the other half covers the various connection methods (ADO/RDO). This book has already saved me a great deal of time. It's well written, with great code examples. I only wish there had been someway to include codes samples on a CD ROM. Overall - TERRIFIC.
