I and another instructor used this as a textbook for a visual basic desktop development course. We both thought it was excellent. We liked that the author covers 19 specific skills at the introductory level. It was not over taxing for the beginner, yet it gave an excellent overview of what could be done in a single-user environment.

There is no discussion of using VB6 in the enterprise (nor should there be at this level). There are other excellent texts that deal in more detail with database programming, and those should definitely be the next step for someone interested in business applications, but this book will get the beginner actually writing complete desktop applications.

What does it lack? In-depth discussion/application of object oriented programming. Database applications. In-depth examples on ActiveX and COM. Anything you might be looking for if you have already been programming in Visual Basic for more than a year.

That is not to fault this book at what its purpose was -> get a newbie up to speed in VB6. We teach more advanced courses and use other books for those. This is an excellent introduction to VB6. Highly recommended for the beginner to intermediate programmer.

This book is excellent for beginners and covers a lot of information. it is rich with coded examples, and the author seems to know how to communicate what he trying to teach in a clear and concise manner, even the print in the book is slightly larger than most books, which certainly makes for clearer reading and less eye strain. for the money you spend on this book is well worth it, considering you could waste your money on other books that claim to make you a VB Pro by the end of the book, but must have lost interest half way through and rushed it. This book however does not do this and everything was covered very clearly and concisley, but will not make you a pro at the end of the book like other books claim to do. If you do buy this book (if you are a beginner I recommend that you do) also buy Pure Vb6 together these two books really will put you on good grounding to write clear well written and designed VB6. Verdict If you are a complete novice or someone who knows the basics of Vb6 but wants to learn how to do more BUY THIS BOOK!

The book covers Visual Basic 6 quite well, in that it touches on all the elements. However, the layout is dreadful. For example, the book has you creating your own classes (SmartForm) in chapter ("Skill") 3, BEFORE it has even explained the syntax of a CASE statement (Skill 4). Similarly, it takes you through the intricacies of boolean operators, including the binary table (bitwise comparison) - and yet later in the book tells you that you'll never need to understand binary! There are also several errors in the program code, and a few places where there is redundant code (SmartForm class). The book is also very bad at introducing new commands and functions, and then making no attempt to explain why they have been used.

Okay if you need to learn VB6 quickly, as it goes at a reasonable pace, but lousy if you are used to learning easy concepts before difficult concepts. But be prepared to have to use another book to clear up mess!

Would not recommend the book - would dissuade!
