I bought this book on the strength of the same publisher's excellent Access/VBA Developers' Handbooks. How disappointed I was. It skims over all of the topics without getting into any of them in-depth, the examples are trivial, and much of the book merely reproduces Microsoft puffery.

There is more information, and better organised, available for free at the MSDN library.

When I bought this book, it went straight into number one position of my VB book collection. I have 10 VB books and I am always drawn back to this one and I am not sure why. I can only put it down to the fact that it seems to always have what I am looking for and it's easy to follow.

I found this book to be a good combination of theoretical and practical chapters with a clear bias towards SQL Server as a database backend. However, SQL Server is the ideal choice example for a database since the author doesn't need to go into too much detail in order to get his points across. Personally, I prefer a lot of practical examples where each chunk of code is explained and this book is a little weak on this. But it is an excellent general book that should cater for a wide spectrum of VB developers. However, I would say for the really advanced material you should go and look at the Wrox stuff since, IMHO, this book takes you upto intermediate level in terms of industrial capabilities. I didn't find any questions at the end of each chapter. This is my only largish gripe though.
