'A delightfully odd collection of characters and deft period details produce a rich and funny read.' --Publishers Weekly

Product Description

This is a wickedly witty Lady Julia Grey mystery. 'There are things that walk abroad on the moor that should not. But the dead do not always lie quietly, do they, lady?' It is England, 1888. Grimsgrave Manor is an unhappy house, isolated on the Yorkshire moors, silent and secretive. But secrets cannot be long kept in the face of Lady Julia Grey's incurable curiosity. In the teeth of protests from her conventional, stuffy brother, Lady Julia decides to pay a visit to the enigmatic detective, Nicholas Brisbane to bring a woman's touch to his new estate. Grimsgrave is haunted by the ghosts of its past, and its owner seems to be falling into ruin along with the house. Confronted with gypsy warnings and Brisbane's elusive behaviour, Lady Julia scents a mystery. It's not long before her desire for answers leads her into danger unlike any other that she has experienced - and from which, this time, there may be no escape.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait!, 11 May 2009
By findingmoxie (London, UK) - See all my reviews
When I read the first in this series, I didn't think it could be improved on--I just enjoyed all the characters immensely and was enthralled by the author's voice. Two books later and I'm happily amazed. While not quite a clear cut who-dunnit like the other books, in my opinion Silent on the Moor surpassed the others in the development of the relationships between characters. The Yorkshire setting is an excellently atmospheric background for Lady Julia Grey and Nicholas Brisbane's relationship. The mystery uncovered is pretty haunting and not a little creepy as well. It's a wonderful read. You won't be disappointed in this as a sequel. I just hope there's more to come!!

5.0 out of 5 stars thrid ones the charm, 10 Jul 2009

This is the third in the Nicholas Brisbane/ Lady Julia Grey series and I hope not the last.
It is a fantastic series and I would recommend that you start from the beginning (Silent in the grave) to understand the main characters relationship but this book can be read on its own as each is a self contained mystery and lots of the secondary character stuff is explained in the book anyway.
Silent in the moor see Lady Julia and her sister Portia visiting their friend Brisbane at his new estate in Yorkshire. As usual they stumble on a suspicious death and one of the many mysteries of Nicholas' past. Fun, engaging and mysterious this book will satisfy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book! Wonderful series!, 4 Mar 2009
By L. J. Roberts (Oakland, CA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
First Sentence: "Julia Grey, I would rather see you hanged than watch any sister of mine go haring off after a man who will not have her," my brother Bellmont raged.

Lady Jane Grey is put out knowing that the man she loves, Nicholas Brisbane, has asked her sister, Portia, to help him renovate his new home in Yorkshire, Grimsgave Hall, but has not invited her. Being on the Mad March's, she is going, invitation or no. So Jane, Portia, and their bother Valarian, head to Yorkshire.

Grimsgrave Hall is in the moors, remote from any town, half ruined and Brisbane is not alone. Jane is surprised to find Lady Allenby and her two daughters still live there, proud of the purity of their bloodline back to the Norman kings.

Jane finds the deceased father and son were fascinated by Egyptology and have many artifacts from their travels there, and decides to catalogue them. What she doesn't expect is to find a coffin containing the wrapped remains of two babies...with the golden blonde hair of the Allenby family.

I needed an enjoyable, engrossing, romantic story and this was it. Ignore the cover of the book as it not remotely representative of the story. Yes, the romance between Jane and Brisbane is critical to the story, but there are no graphic sexual scenes involved.

Set on the moors of Yorkshire, it is a classic, highly atmospheric suspense with wonderful humor, great characters, heart-quickening romance.

Raybourn creates such a strong sense of place and her dialogue is appropriate to the period and the characters. From independent, determined Jane to all the pets, the characters are so well drawn. They are human; the positive characters being ones you'd like to know and the negative characters being so subtly drawn you don't know quite what to believe until it is revealed. There is breath-catching suspense but also a subtle evil.

This was, for me, the best and most literate of the three books with impeccable details of Victorian life and manners. I loved the excerpts from Shakespeare used as chapter headings, as well as the references to Bronte and religion: "Religion is as intimate as making love and ought to be a private."

This was the perfect read for a rainy Sunday. I loved it and want more.
