Starting where he left off at the end of Three Cheers for Me, as a flying instructor at Gosport, Bandy is suddenly called away to higher things. He finds himself elevated to Colonel and is assigned a small office in a disused W.C. at the War Ministry.
Volume II of the bandy papers is written in two distinct halves. The first half is bogged down with political machinations and references to people and events, which, I am ashamed to admit, are beyond me. There are some very funny moments, but it is, as I wrote in my review of its predecessor, not up to the level of book one.
Part One reaches its climax at Fallow, a boys' school in Cheshire where Bandy is commandeered against all his protestations into giving a speech. He is being abused by those above him as a mouthpiece for their own political ends. Needless to say, he abandons the prepared text and, much to the fury of his superiors, he speaks from the heart.
His fall from grace is sudden and precipitous but it leads, fortuitously for us, to Part Two. Bandy is demoted and sent back to the front where he is attached to a bicycle battalion roaming France in the retreat from Amiens. Donald Jack is in his element again and some of the old Bandy can be seen. There are some truly funny moments, but funny in the way that Spike Milligan's war memoirs are funny. He has a roaring good time despite the graphic carnage portrayed around him. After some Bandiesque heroics against fierce enemy opposition, he is discovered by the newly-created Royal Air Force who had been looking for him for weeks. His return to France had not been officially sanctioned and he is needed back in the air. He drives his Rolls Royce (a very long story!) home to Burma Park to marry Katherine. The climax (if I may call it that) of Part Two is the consummation of their wedding.
Not wishing to dampen That's Me in the Middle too much, I can only say that it lacks the delightful pace of Three Cheers for Me. Towards the end, the Donald Jack style is resurrected and the book ends in good position to pick up Volume III, It's Me Again.

This is an easy to read and a very entertaining look at how to succeed without really trying. Whatever our hero does turns out in a positive way. Read this its a good way to rid yourself of the blues; it will make you smile.
