"Beautifully crafted, fearless, painfully honest, inspiring and extremely witty. Jennifer Finney Boylan is an exquisite writer with a fascinating story and this combination has resulted in one of the most remarkable, moving and unforgettable memoirs in recent history."
---Augusten Burroughs, author of "Running With Scissors"
"In addition to being a complete delight, this book should make us all question what we mean when we use the words love, marriage, and friendship. Jennifer Finney Boylan is a great gift to womanhood."
--Haven Kimmel, author of "A Girl Named Zippy"

5.0 out of 5 stars The Girl is very much here and now., 27 Jul 2004
By Fiona Jameson "You know what they say about p... (Norfolk, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have to concur with the previous reviewer, this is a beautiful and sensitively written account of what it can mean to be Transsexual. It explores not just how the individual themselves is affected, but also those nearest and dearest to us all. I found myself crying and laughing out loud in turn as Ms Boylan unravelled the curious and tangled strands of her life. Having travelled this path myself at around the same age, I only wish I could write something even approaching this book. I have read several biographies and autobiographies by Transsexuals and have several more on the shelf yet to be read. I will be pleasently surprised if any touch me to the extent that this book did.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone wanting to have some idea of what on earth it is like to transition. A very special person and a superb book.
I wish Ms Boylan and her family all the best in the future, they deserve it for all their courage in the past.

5.0 out of 5 stars A realistic view of what it means to be a transsexual, 22 Jun 2005
By A Customer
A beautifully written and frank exposure of the pain and the joys of transitioning in the 21st century. I found myself agreeing with so much and understanding that we can still have a contribution to life. Jenny's story is a testiment to the love of life, a wife, and the pain that love endures in trying to balance everyone elses feelings with her own.

My wife read this book and cried, she understood so many things I could not find the words to say. Jenny's story offered enlightenment and hope to couples in transition.

I bought three copies in the end, one to give to my friends, one to my children and one to my parents. Thank you so much Jenny..
Sarah

5.0 out of 5 stars She's not there, a life in two genders, 19 Aug 2003
By ms claire e jenkins (nottingham United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This is a beautifully written account by Jenny Boylan of many of the issues thoughts and feelings she, her family and friends encountered during her life time transition from the male to female gender. Jenny is an acclaimed imaginative fiction writter who uses her skill and humour to explore with the reader her journey. As a transsexual woman who has also journied a similar path through a gender change I found Jenny's story honest and refreshing. She raised many fundamental issues about gender and relationships which I and others like us struggle to understand and come to terms with. Jenny optimistically shows her care and compassion for the many vulnerable people who are transsexual and for those who love them.
