Review

"With the help of his friends, Jones has composed a life story that gives much more than the typical celebrity memoir." "there aren't many musicians who came of age in the bebop era who relate with equal ardor to the hip-hop world, making this possibly the only book that fans of Duke Ellington and Tupac Shakur alike might agree on" -- Entertainment Weekly 20011005 "a life story that gives much more than the typical celebrity memoir" - Publishers Weekly -- Publishers Weekly 20010723 "an appealingly convivial blur of deal-making, celebrity anecdotes and professional comebacks" -- The New Yorker 20011003 --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good..But not a 'Warts and All', 27 Jun 2009
This is the autobiography of world remowned jazz musician, composer and producer Quincy Jones. Recounting his rags to riches story, through his love of music and the many women who shared his bed and fathered his children. It is a tale of optimism where hard work and staying true to your beliefs will reap rewards. He calls French dignitry and past American presidents his friends and has partied and played hard with the best of them. His troubled childhood with a mentally-ill and misunderstood mother who left his life at a young age to enter a mental hospital and drifted in and out of his life until her death at 95yrs old, to the hard-working and gentle father that tried his best in difficult times. His life-long affection and love of his brother Lloyd and his heartbreaking struggle with cancer. His own life-saving brain operations and breakdown. His love for 5 different women who fathered his 7 children. Producing the mega hit album 'Thriller' with Michael Jackson, scoring 'The Color Purple'.It is all accounted for here. The problem that I had with this book is the constant name-dropping. He must have re-counted everyone he knows here and then some. It interrupts the flow of the story and I found myself skipping through the sentences that are full of names. The other issue that I have is that, he admits to being a serial adulterer but never really acknowledges the pain and heartbreak that that leaves behind both for the spouce and the children involved. He does admit to shutting down emotionally when trouble errupts which may explain why he finds the words hard to lay bare on paper. For these two reasons, it looses 2 stars for me. On the plus side, his optimism is infectious and I am sure he is good company and a good friend to have. I have learned much more about the man from reading this, which can't be a bad thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, 30 Mar 2009
After watching a documentary on Quincy Jones, I really wanted to read his autobiography. The book goes into a lot more detail than the documentary especially when talking about his relationship with his family. Would definately recommend this to any fan of music, whether jazz, pop or hip hop. You won't be disappointed.
