From the Author
Hello from RonHi everyone -
Just in case you couldn't tell from the title, I wanted to tell you a bit more about who you'll meet in the pages of Upstart Start-Ups and what they have to say.
Entrepreneurship isn't just for people with a ton of business experience anymore. From Bill Gates to Michael Dell to the juice guys who started Nantucket Nectars, there are plenty of people who have started incredibly successful businesses who had no prior work experience whatsoever.
How is this possible? Business has changed. Boundaries have fallen, start-up funding is more easily available, and people have become disillusioned about working for large corporations that don't reflect their values. All of this has contributed to the unleashing of a torrent of creative energy, which people are channeling into building their own upstart start-ups.
We've all read plenty about the boom in technology, and young entrepreneurs at places like Yahoo have made a mint, to be sure. But there are plenty of opportunities in industries that don't require a lot of technical know-how. In Upstart Start-Ups you'll read of the entrepreneurial adventures of the founders of Magnetic Poetry, Kate Spade, and many other people who started amazingly successful companies that didn't require them to write a lot of software code.
Finally, you don't need an MBA to be able to understand this book. Reviewers have described the writing style as "breezy," which I take as a compliment. Business books don't have to be boring, and I'd like to think that this one might actually make you smile occasionally. Who knows? It might be the push you need to send you spinning off into your own career as an upstart.
