5.0 out of 5 stars unconventional...underappreciated...outstanding, 12 Mar 2003

This review is from: Girl [DVD] [1999] (DVD)
Director Jon Kahn drove a ten-lane highway through established teen-movie clichés to create this superior, intelligent work. Neither straightforward teen-movie, chick-flick nor rom-com, 'Girl' has a cross-gender, cross-generational appeal which defies easy categorisation (rarely can any movie have been so ill-described by its tagline).

Based loosely on Blake Nelson's well-received 1994 debut novel of the same name, the movie follows 6 months in the life of high-school senior Andrea Marr as she drifts in and out of suburban conformity and flirts with the local underground. Kahn displayed great skill in adapting Nelson's much more broadly-focussed work (the novel spans 3 years) into a movie script which plays fast and loose with the book's plotlines while staying true to its underlying message that life is about making choices and moving on. Nowhere is this more evident than at the very end, when the movie shuns easy and predictable formula in favour of a poignant, emotionally subtle resolution which is deeply satisfying.

'Girl' is extraordinarily well-cast. Constrained by budget to cast a group of then virtually-unknown actors, decisions made back in 1998 have been largely vindicated by time. While several cast members such as Tara Reid and Selma Blair have since gone on to fame and mainstream success, Dominique Swain (at the time of the movie's release a rising star) still languishes in indie limbo, but the style and conviction which she brings to the title role hints at the career which may still await her.

As an independant production which failed to sit comfortably in its 'teen-movie' pigeonhole, 'Girl' inevitably struggled for wider box-office success. It is to be hoped that this long-delayed Region 2 DVD release will take it a step closer to the recognition which it so richly deserves.

Highly recommended.
