4.0 out of 5 stars “What’s the Matter with Kids Today?”, 16 Jan 2006
By bernie "xyzzy" (Arlington, Texas) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Conrad Birdie (Jesse Pearson), a famous self-centered rock and roll star is about to be drafted into the military (shades of Elvis.) A plot/plan to make several people happy and rich is to have Conrad bestow “One Last Kiss” on a randomly chosen young lady from his fan club. The lucky girl is Kim McAfee (Ann-Margret) much to the consternation of her steady boyfriend. This will be done on the Ed Sullivan Show. Many other lives and fortunes revolve around this plan.

Much more entertaining than the story is the interaction of the characters and this is a musical.

From play to stage this was well done. Dick Vandyke however though this was just vehicle for Ann Margaret. I look on it as the measuring stick by which all other versions, stage or movie are gauged by. I find my self singing many of the songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars SINGING BIRDS FROM THE PARADISE FLOCK IN, 30 April 2009
By Dr. U. L. Khawaja "usman khawaja" (hornchurch ,london) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
this is meant to be a movie adaptation of the stage musical of the same name though it has been altered to show case the marvellous charms of Ann MARGARET and it does full justice to her vivacious beauty and ebullient singing and dancing talent ,equally matched by Bobby RYDELL ,who plays her love interest and has to compete with Birdie[PEARSON ] in some stunning song dances .

the plot revolves around birdie played in a comic spoof of ELVIS PRESLEY BY JAMES PEARSON ,and it involves the rather daft notice of elvis being drafted in the US army that actually transpired in 59 ,

while birdie is to be given a farewell at Ed sullivan show by Ann Margaret ,the hilariously multi-stranded plot evolves with an excellent crew including DICK VAN DYKE and JANET LEIGH as frustrated lovers, playing song writer and a dance pair in birdie's team .

they are continuously AND hilariously harassed by DYKE'S MOTHER -MAUREEN STAPLETON ,who alone is worth the price of this dvd in a sparkling act as an obsessed maternal icon who will not let go of her thirty something son .

janet leigh and dick are both fabulously funny and their dancing and singing is as great as their marvellous acting prowess's.

the script has some insanely funny one liners and very CAMP dialogues and situations where the retro 60's chic is fully flaunted from funky sleeping pyjamas to lunatic golden outfits worn by birdie as presley dress alike .

the songs are the topping on this delicious cake and make this a real feast -

my favourites are

a LOT OF LIVIN' TO DO-

SULTAN'S BALLET ,

ONE LAST KISS ,

KIDS ,

ROSIE ,AND the title song sung by ann margaret in the finale .

THE choreography is stunning and the colours are vibrant with both ANN AND LEIGH looking as gorgeous as the birds from paradise and the dancing is deliciously diverse from classical to opera to rock' roll.

though it is not just a fun musical as it takes a satirical dig at war and drafting procedures and the establishment in a very cunning and obsequious manner .

this is a funny ,frothy funky frolic and should be seen and collected by anyone who likes witty ,well made musical comedy dramas with a very talented crew .
