4.0 out of 5 stars Good, 7 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Although this book is enjoyable it is nowhere near the standards of Fleming's previous novels. The main problem is that it has an unfinished feel to it; the elements are mostly in place but remain under developed. A classic example of this is the villain, Scaramanga. He is a fairly one dimensional character whose motivations change too quickly, and whose project is too small scale. This novel lacks the detail, suspense and characterisation of previous Bond novels, and while not exactly a bad book it is an unsatisfying and fairly shallow end for Ian Fleming's James Bond. Even so, it remains better than most of the latter John Gardner Bond novels, and all of Raymond Benson's efforts.
