Product Description

In 1984 Kenneth Johnson stunned the television world with his enormously popular miniseries of alien invasion, V. The V novelisation was a bestseller. Now, to the delight of millions of fans and a new generation who have yet to discover the power of V, Johnson has written the exciting conclusion of his epic thriller. Suffering under the lash of the alien Visitors' control, the human underground have risked their lives for decades as they desperately try to find ways to thwart their reptilian overlords' dire plan. For while the Visitors claim to be Earth's friends, they instead seek only to exploit our planet's lifeblood-water-and slaughter all humankind. But now the Underground has hope, because our call for help, sent out to the stars long ago, has been answered by agents of another alien race. They have come to Earth, to aid the Underground in defeating the Visitors. But even as the humankind and our new allies work with the Underground to forestall the culmination of the Visitors' terrible plan, the question remains: Can our new alien friends really be trusted? Or will they help us to defeat one alien oppressor merely to become our new masters? The enormous success of the original miniseries and the long wait for a worthy sequel has created a vast audience that will flock to this exciting new thriller. This pulse-pounding novel will keep readers riveted as it rockets toward a stunning conclusion both satisfying and utterly unexpected.

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh no, what a dire update, 7 Oct 2008
By Karl Carroll - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Oh so so bad. Like many I an an avid fan of the original (excluding the series). I loved the original and final battle including its characters so when I heard about this, I was eagerly awaiting its release.

As for the book, starts of decently with a hint of more to come but sadly it falls apart soon after. I dont want to give the book away but its hard not to without explaining why this book falls down so hard but I will try.

Plot: So easily seen coming well in advance. Not a single part of the plot catches you by surprise/

New aliens: Like something from a bad 1980's TV series. They outmatch the visitors too much and this leaves you feeling that humanity really are the dregs of the universe. Your also left wondering just how the visitors are still in existence having 'narrowly' been beaten when the new aliens could so easily have destroyed them.

Technology: Hasnt moved on at all really. Again the stuff you see reads from the 1970s and is just cheesy (flying bikes with nukes and the like)

Earth and the last 20 years: It gets a little better here, some aspects of modern earth are interesting and depict a world in decline and this bleak view peaks your interest. Also, the history of the resistence is interesting but only briefly mentioned and seems (again like a cheap series) to have only effected unknown characters. Sadly the visitor friends have also gone down hill while strangely, the worlds armies and police still exist and co-operate despite not wanting to( believe me it makes no sense)

Visitors: As pathetic and easily outwitted / out fought that the ones from the TV series seem like elite SAS soldiers in comparison. How can we not beat them? That question remains unanswered.

Resistence: Appears to have done little over the 20 years and dont seem to be suffering in any way. Strangly stagnant/

Overvall: Again Im restricted because I dont want to give much away but lets just say, it makes no sense from start to finish. Characters that we saw die are alive, others never existed. Many new characters are straight from 1980s shows and have no appeal. Even the main characters are hard to empathise with and the main shocking plot twist involving a character and teh visitors is so boring and obvious within 10 pages.

I really really dont get this book, Mr Johnston, stick to TV and for the sake of a good book / show, accept what actually happened in the TV series even if it was muck

2.0 out of 5 stars Awful, avoid., 11 May 2008
I was excited by the thought of reading this having waited so long. Now i just feel very deflated, i bought the book for the update to the story but basically don't bother. It reads exactly like a screenplay rather than a novel. In fact it even feels a bit 1st draftish....lazy and predictable, i have read it and rather than with most books i buy which i will re-read this one has been sold immediately.

If you must, buy it for the continuation of the story but don't expect much...except for a new mini series, which will confuse anyway as you have to forget that the Final battle mini series existed as that had nothing to do with Johnson so he has ignored it.

Very predictable and by the numbers, can't believe this made it past his editor.....oh and flying bikes with stealth.....errr wasn't that done in Battlestar Galactica 1980!!! They were rubbish then, now they are just super cheesy. Basically avoid and save your money, if you must read it then i would advise to go down the library and read it for free.

2.0 out of 5 stars Oh no, Johnson ignores what went before!, 27 Aug 2008
By Taliesin (Hampshire, England) - See all my reviews
Now I've been waiting for this book for ages, and having read virtually all the others written about V, I had high hopes this would add to the reading pleasure I've had.

Unfortunately I was dissapointed...

From the awful, mostly amateurish writing, to johnson ignoring all that has happened before, for example certain characters shouldn't be here, and some should, can't say too much without giving away the plot, well what plot there is anyway.

It also takes an age to get things moving, and some things as described don't seem to gel. For example if the water has reduced areas to desert, why have fish sellers doing a brisk trade? He hasn't thought this one out at all. And if the proposed new mini series is anything like this book there'll be a lot of dissapointed people out there. Ann Crispin did it a lot better with the first V book, why she wasn't asked to write this one is beyond me.
