5.0 out of 5 stars A vibrant conclusion to a wonderful epic., 23 May 2002
By saminaghafoor@hotmail.com (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Summer Queen (Paperback)
The Summer Queen is a wonderful sequel to The Snow Queen and Worlds End. It continues the story on Tiamat a few months on from the end of the Snow Queen and details the problems faced by Moon as Lady of Tiamat, the superstitions she must overcome amongst her peoples, the difficulties of her love for Sparks, as well as continuing concern for the mers. Moons reign is further troubled by the Hegemony, who as detailed in Worlds End, have discovered the Stardrive and are about to descend upon Tiamat and begin their exploitation anew. Joan D Vinge again manages to create a fascinating vibrant world peopled by characters you care about and although at times it makes you despair for humanity, it gives you hope and it makes you feel alive. Once again she seems to effortlessly blend and weave all the threads of the story gradually, building to a tense finale where everything is at stake for Moon, the mers and all of civilisation. The Summer Queen is as beautifully written, richly detailed and darkly passionate as the Snow queen and I loved it, not just for the fantastic story but for the way I became so involved. It continues the lives of all the old characters and introduces new ones of as much interest and depth so that once again the reader is fully immersed and empathising with each of them. The book is wider in scope than the original, weaving in the life and customs of some of the other planets and systems and also provides us with a history of the origins of the Sybil net. An exciting and mesmerising novel, which I found unable to put down and led me to read all three books again. If you liked the Snow Queen you will love this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Universal Vision, 28 Feb 2003
By A Customer
If you enjoyed the Snow Queen but found the ending a little unsatisfactory, this sequel redresses the balance. This is Moon's story after the offworlders leave Tiamat. Spanning galaxies, the plot twists and turns through circles within circles of corruption to its breathtaking conclusion. I found it highly satisfying as an action filled adventure story, based on a fascinating scientific premise and as a love story that changes civilisation. The best sci-fi I've read in a long time.

2.0 out of 5 stars Alas...., 7 Jul 2003
By moif (Aarhus, Denmark) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Summer Queen (Paperback)
'The Snow Queen' was a favourite of mine for close on fifteen years, and I still think it is a brilliant book. It has a romantic 'non tech' feel to it, which I found extremely appealing.

Alas, 'The Summer Queen' does not have that quality, and without it, the book reads like a failed attempt to add credibility to the original story. Its almost as if de Vinge was embarressed by her earlier work...

As much as I like the work of Joan de Vinge I would'nt recommend this book to any one who enjoyed 'The Snow Queen'.
