Product Description

Review
"SF's greatest novelist, and overall one of America's finest. . . a wonder, yes, a genius."-"The Washington Post Book World"

Product Description
This omnibus of two acclaimed novels is the story of Latro, a Roman mercenary who was fighting in Greece when he received a head injury that deprived him of his short-term memory but gave him in return the ability to see and converse with the supernatural creatures, the gods and goddesses, who invisibly inhabit the classical landscape. Latro forgets everything when he sleeps. Writing down his experiences every day and reading his journal anew each morning gives him a poignantly tenuous hold on himself, but his story's hold on readers is powerful indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars So what happened to the survivors after Athens was burned?, 25 Nov 2003
By Carlos Huggins (Chelmsford, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This story picks up from the end of Herodotus' account of the invasion and defeat of the Persian army (the fish being fried in the watch-tower), but focuses on individuals and their experiences in a torn and politically divided land. It is not easy reading as all names are in local translation , so Athens is Thought, and Demeter is The Earth Mother, and there are deliberate breakes in narrative and in the accuracy of his account. This I suspect is a deliberate attempt to mimic the fog of war effect, and it pays off.

It sound complicated and it is, but the superb prose and vision make this elusive tale of a brain-damaged mercenary who can converse with the supernatural probably the best book I've read by Wolfe. My copy is worn out so I bought a second.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wolfe's best, 10 Nov 2003
This novel charts the progress of Latro, a wounded Roman mercenary. Originally sold as two separate novels, soldier of the mist and soldier of arete, this omnibus edition brings the two together. A highly enjoyable read, it sets the background to ancient Greece fabulously, and really conveys the beliefs and realities of a time when the Gods walked among men.
