Product Description

Product Description

Caught in traffic. Trapped in a cubicle. Stuck in a rut.  Tangled up in red tape.

In the real world, sometimes you feel powerless—but not in Dungeons & Dragons (D & D). In this fantasy–adventure, you have all kinds of special powers. You can slay the evil dragon, overcome the orc or the ogre, haunt the werewolf, and triumph over sinister trolls. You venture into strange realms, encounter strange creatures, and use magical powers. Your character grows and develops with every adventure.

With this guide, you can learn the ins and outs of D & D and start playing right away. Dungeons & Dragons For Dummies gives beginners the basics of the complex game and helps experienced players fine–tune their roleplaying. It guides you through:

  • Creating your character (a powerful fighter, a sneaky rogue, a crafty sorcerer, or a charismatic cleric), and character advancement
  • The races: humans, dwarves, elves, and halflings
  • The types of character actions: attack rolls, skill check, and ability checks
  • The 6 abilities: strength, dexterity, constitution, intelligence, wisdom, charisma
  • Feat requirements and types
  • Playing the game, including moving in combat, attacking with a weapon (melee attacks or ranged attacks), and damage and dying
  • Picking skills, armor, weapons, and gear
  • Choosing spells if your character is a sorcerer or domains for a cleric
  • Building encounter or combat strategies and using advanced tactics
  • Maximizing your character’s power with the acquisition of the right magic items: armor, weapons, potion, scroll, ring, wand, staff, rod, plus wondrous items
  • D & D game etiquette
  • Becoming a Dungeon Master

There’s even a sample play session that walks you through typical play, gets you comfortable using the battle grid and character markers, lets you test player characters against each other and against monsters, and shows you how to add story elements to create an adventure. Produced in partnership with Wizards of the Coast, written by D & D game designers, and complete with a battle grid, a sample dungeon map, and a glossary, this guide arms you with the knowledge to create and equip a character and empowers you to enter the captivating, fascinating world of D & D.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good introduction, 16 Feb 2006
By D. J. Stone (Oxford, England) - See all my reviews

This book is a good introduction to the Dungeons and Dragons v3.5 game.
For a beginner like myself, it gives an overview of everything you need to know. However, it comes across as a taster only: there are a lot of times it refers to interesting things, but then says to see the Player Manual for details.
For a beginner wanting to find out about the game, I'd reccommend this book, but if you want to get serious about playing you will need the Player Manual as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read, 27 Jun 2009

This book was brilliant for me, I have only just started to play Dungeons and Dragons and this book made more sense to me than the handbooks and taught me the basic rules and regulations of the game. It also has dungeon master information to get you started which was really useful.

Brilliant book 5 Stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars D&D for dummies... brilliant, 7 Feb 2009
By Anders Stage - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This "For dummies" guide is perhaps one of the greatest ways to get started on the new edition of Dungeons & Dragons.

It includes everything you actually need to know to get started as a newbie. Even though you need the three core rulebooks in order to play the full game, this is an absoulutely great start. (And it actually deals with one of the most complicated subjects of D&D which is to say... explaining to other folks and people outside the hobby what the heck this game is all about.

There are a few mistakes that may cause a bit of confusion.
For example: The sample dungeon poster map contained within this book is from the 3,0 version of the same book. And so there is a sorcerer chip, from which there are no character sheet connected(It's representing the wizard I suppose).

Apart from that and a few other minor mistakes this is a great starting point for any potential gamer and I can hardly recommend it.
