Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

If you are just getting your feet wet in Web site construction, the first big hurdle is figuring out where to start. Building a Web Site for Dummies lightens things up with humour and makes the challenge of building a site far less daunting.

This book doesn't zoom you right into coding HTML--though it covers the markup language quite well. Instead, it offers a much higher level look at site design by examining the general questions of navigation principles, affiliates possibilities, building communications with your users, and other wide-ranging topics. For this reason, the book covers a lot of ground and offers a broad perspective on site design that transcends simple page coding.

A couple of the more useful sections on Web site tools and e-commerce cover useful utilities like NetMechanic, Statbot and Spinwave. The chapter on e-commerce helps you get to know the ropes of selling stuff online and points you to online malls, fulfilment services, and currency converters.

The companion CD-ROM contains evaluation versions of useful tools like Paint Shop Pro, HomeSite 4.5, Fireworks, Dreamweaver and Statbot. You won't find all the knowledge you seek to become a Web site guru in this book, but you will gain perspective and learn tons of useful tips and tricks. --Stephen W. Plain --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not useful for novices, 19 Oct 2004
I am a complete novice when it comes to web-design. I saw this book and immediately thought that it would provide a perfect starting point for my attempts at building my own website. I was very wrong, as it assumes that you have a reasonable level of understanding from the outset. It is probably very beneficial for those who want to expand on their knowledge, or to improve their web-designing abilities, offering what seem like useful and informative advanced tips, but for beginners it is far too overwhelming. I'm going to try a more accessible book first, and then come back to this once I'm a web guru.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rip off, 30 Nov 2007
By Kathryn "A real dummy" (Gloucestershire) - See all my reviews
This book should be banned under the Trades Descriptions Act - it is not for dummies. Probably useful if you intend to hire an expert to build the web site for you, otherwise useless.
I only gave it one star so I could give the review, my score is minus 10.
I will not sell it to torture some other poor soul, I will be burning it!
This will teach me to read the reviews!

1.0 out of 5 stars Too advanced for this Dummie, 22 Aug 2008
By Mrs. C. E. Annals "Claire Annals" (Nottinghamshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Being a complete novice but also not able to pay someone else to build my website I opted for the 'well known name' to help me to build my own website. Big mistake - the first few pages state that it is assumed that you already know how to build a website - duh who commissioned this? About as useful as a chocolate teapot.
