Read a number of books on Yosemite and Sequoia, and this proved the most useful by far. Good layout made it easy to pick out specific info on trails, views, etc and good Highlights Sections pick out "not to be missed" sights. This book proved to be very useful for short stays in and first time visits to the region, covering well known and less well known trails. If you are looking to buy just one book on the region, this would be the one.

I bought this book based on the high praise of another reviewer, and while I agree that the guide is very well laid out and a good resource for anyone visiting Yosemite or Kings Canyon for the first time, be warned that I found some of the information to be many many years out of date.

For example, when choosing walks based on the author's recommendations, we discovered that Mirror Lake in Yosemite Valley has been dried up. Locals tell me it's been like that for years. The Park Authority hasn't warned tourists about this as the route is still clearly labelled, and when you finally realise you've reached the correct site you will find display boards with pictures of a lake, but no lake in front of you.

Climbing up to Elizabeth Lake in Toulomne (pronounced 'Tw-ollow-may'), described by the author as "one long Kodak moment" filled us with excitement, but apart from the first half an hour which we wasted trying to find a signpost (it was buried deep within a wooded campsite), the walk was entirely surrounded by trees up to and including the lake itself. There were no views, and the age of the trees suggested that perhaps 10-15 years ago you would have got some lovely views from up here. Avoid Elizabeth Lake, go up to Lembert Dome via Dog Lake instead, which affords you breathtaking views of Toulumne Meadows and the surrounding mountains.

This book is great for giving you ideas, and you can base walks around the trails suggested, but always be sure to check with a Park Ranger or Information Centre first to avoid disappointment. I would thoroughly recommend a day hike from Grand Sentinel in Sequoia National Park, through the Giant Forest to Moro Rock and back again in a loop. If you're lucky you may even get to see some bears!
