Product Description

Review

A book that lives up to its name, author Ann Douglas has packed a remarkable amount of text, charts and tables into this 500–plus page volume that covers nearly every aspect of pregnancy, from considering pregnancy (is there ever a "good" time to do it?) to nutrition, exercise, breast–feeding and the top 10 worries for each trimester.
Incredibly comprehensive yet easy to follow, Douglas, author of a number of pregnancy books, also covers infertility, high–risk pregnancy, miscarriage and infant loss. Charts and tables show how chronic disease, as well as prescription and non–prescription drugs, can affect a pregnancy. Wondering if you′re too old to conceive or give birth? Douglas discusses the facts of pregnancy past ages 20, 30 and 40.
"The Complaint Department" chapter discusses nearly every conceivable ache, pain and medical issue that can arise during pregnancy and how to deal with them. Facts and figures, as well as quotes that are pertinent to each topic, are dispersed throughout. A huge listing of organizations and Web sites that deal with everything from breast–feeding to adoption rounds out this volume. Very little is discussed when it comes to postpregnancy and baby care; that will be covered in the author′s upcoming book, "The Mother of All Baby Books." 2.0 out of 5 stars No Illustrations, 22 Dec 2003
By A Customer
A well researched book with plenty of information for new mothers, but dont be fooled if your looking for a book full of information and pictures of how your baby is developing over the pregancy. The title suggests that it has every peice of information that you could possibley require, which is more than likely true, but i was very disappointed to find nil in diagram form.

Otherwise it is an original book, but could be improved.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book but neds more health information, 12 Jun 2007

I ordered this book on the recommendation of a baby messageboard. I enjoyed the book and will use during my future pregnancy. The only downside was the lack of more information on healthy choices before becoming pregnant and little information for partners.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not impressed with this book, 23 Jul 2006
I would not go so far as to say that this is the worst book ever (hence the two stars) but I personally did not like it. It does not really go into much depth about any particular area, it more or less is just a short overview on various issues on pregnancy. Many topics are covered in about 3 or 4 paragraphs. This book has limited information about preconception health and issues, which was disappointing since the title leads you to believe otherwise. The way this book is written is very scattered and does not flow. It jumps from topic to topic without any serious chronological order, which is odd, and this makes it difficult to sit down and read in one go. It is better used as a reference manual.

The author's general attitude towards pregnancy and motherhood is very single minded as far as I'm concerned. An example of this is that she has in the section "Breast of Bottle" absolutely nothing helpful at all for women who for whatever reason will be bottle feeding - there is literally nothing on it even though the chapter title makes you think there will be balanced advice and info. There actually is nothing particularly helpful on either form of feeding an infant, come to think of it. The author obviously is against bottle feeding and therefore the information on this section is totally one sided and biased. If the author truly wanted to give balanced info on an important issue such as feeding an infant she would include advice for people bottle feeding their child. Another example of bias is that she is very anti circumcision and does a poor job at masking this. I respect that everyone is entitled to their own opinion but there are many reasons for circumcision and I found it insulting when the author writes (quote), "It's those 'personal, religious, and cultural' factors that tend to muddy the waters the most". What is that supposed to mean? She does not even explain this remark further and then just goes on to tell a few horror stories of circumcision. This is in my opinion, a one sided and unfair remark on her part. The author seems to be implying that parents who choose circumcision either don't have particularly valid reasons for doing so and/or they don't think it through properly. Any responsible parent would find that attitude insulting as well. Plus, if one does choose circumcision she has no information on caring for a baby post circumcision nor does she include any of the health benefits of circumsicion to helps someone who is undecided make an educated decision. I'm convinced the only reason the author put this topic in her book was to voice her own dislike of circumcision. I feel she did the same with the section on "Breast or Bottle". There are other topics that the author clearly writes exclusively from her own opinion or experience and I felt that the book was mostly biased information as a result.

One or two of the table's in this book are quite useful, but most are very frightening because they are just lists of horrible things that could go wrong with a pregnancy, or birth defects, etc. These tables come across as cold, unfeeling and clinical. Perhaps had these topics been written up in paragraphs in more depth it would not have come across like this. I found these tables annoying to use and wished it was written up properly. There's one that shows various different types of common medications and the possible side effects on the unborn baby but the author really should stress that these are all things that need to be discussed with your doctor, rather then leading people to think they should use the book to decide which medication they should or should not take. There are no pictures or illustrations anywhere in this book and no information on the development of the unborn baby in the womb. Overall, I'm not impressed with this book and I would not recommend it.
