Product Description

Review
"this book will give you practical information on and understandable explanations of your dog's behaviour and how to train him." --Dogs Monthly, August 2008

The `For Dummies' brand is used in a humorous political cartoon. --The Independent, Monday 14th July 2008 --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Product Description
A well–trained dog is the result of education – actually, more yours than your dog’s. You need to know what makes a dog a dog: how he thinks, reacts, grows, and expresses himself; what his needs are; and most important, why he does what he does. When you understand your dog, you will achieve a mutually rewarding relationship. Dogs aren′t homogeneous. Each one is unique, and in their differences lie the challenge.

Dog Training For Dummies can help anyone who has just brought home a puppy or is thinking of getting one. Even if you have experience with dog training, you’ll find useful information for a wide variety of dog breeds and personalities. This book is also for you if

  • You want your dog to be well behaved – for his sake as well as yours.
  • You have little or no knowledge of proper dog training techniques
  • You have done some reading on the subject, but have had limited success with your dog.
  • Your dog is partially trained but needs to learn a few more things

Find out what it takes to have a well–behaved pooch by recognizing your dog′s instinctive behaviors and determining its personality profile. Understand what your expectations are and know how your attitude affects your dog′s training. This handy reference guide also covers the following and more:

  • Dealing with barking and chewing
  • Coping with separation anxiety
  • Housetraining a puppy
  • Walking and heeling
  • Retrieving on command
  • Training for competitive dog titles
  • Teaching your dog to be a Companion Dog
  • Dealing with aggression
  • Understanding your dog′s health
  • Going to obedience school

The important thing about dog training is to get started today. The sooner you train your dog to behave the way you want him to, the sooner the two of you can live in peace together, and the more problems you can prevent down the road. So get going! Your dog will thank you for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Buy, 5 April 2005
Having two unruly dogs this book was a dream come true. There are full explanations about everything that you need to know from how to gain the trust of your dog, why they behave the way that they do and how your behaviour effects them. This is along with fantastic techiniques in how to manage and also change the behaviour of your dog. This book comes with high recommendations as it has made my life a lot easier, by being able to understand the behaviours of my dogs and how I can change their behaviour for the better.

4.0 out of 5 stars What would I have done without you !, 25 Mar 2006
By A Customer
I bought this book just after rescuing a 4 month old cute cross breed puppy from the dog pound. 10 months later, when that cute puppy has turned into a very intelligent, but very strong-willed near adult, I am STILL dipping into this book for advice and confirmation that my dog is not the only one who acts in certain ways (not all good !). I have learned an amazing amount about dogs in general and would recommend this book to anyone who feels that they already know a lot, but have an open mind and are willing to learn more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful book, but remeber to use common sense!!!, 23 Jan 2008
By K. Eva "Truffle Searcher" (Finland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A useful book for someone who's not very experienced with dogtraining from puppyhood. But as it goes for everything written or said, whether it's a book or a review, be critical and listen to common sense!! Out there are a lot of books & people who say that they do it the right way and others are sooo wrong...!Also when it comes to fitness & health for us humans!! ;-)

Good to remember; if "the book doesn't work" is you experience, it's not the book or the dog - it's You that doesn't have enough patience...The dog learns, it depends on if You know how to teach it!!

The book provides good information about neutering & spaying, and on the contrary as someone wrote on the review, it focuses a lot of the positive effects of neutering/spaying (did you REALLY read the whole book?)! As much as on why leave the dog as it is.

Crate training was something new for me, but our dog is just a little angel while left alone (and a little menace while we're at home!)- so he sleeps where ever he wants to. This time I chose not to use a crate, maybe dog nr two?

The authors are pro-homeotherapy-fine, let them be so, but YOU chose what's best for your dog!I'm still taking my dog to the vet for treatments, until there's something they or proper training can't fix...? I myself do yoga, but it's not a religion and I leave out "weird" things too!!! Common sense again...

I've had two dog earlier, but none from puppuhood, so this dummy was pleased with this book (and several other ones too)!!
