The book is good, the NetWare5 Handbook was better, 26 Jun 2002
Having already got the NetWare 5 Admistrator's Handbook I thought the NetWare 6 one would be equally useful. I was disappointed to find that some parts of the Netware 6 book seem little more than glorified overviews of product features new to NetWare 6.In the Preface there is a paragraph explaining, "What this book is not" and it is not, apparently, designed to introduce you to the world of data networking. It goes on to say that in order to keep the size of the book down and keep it useful as a quick reference, only brief introductions are given to basic concepts. To be fair it does also say that the book has not been written to be a complete reference. However, in the NW5 Handbook there are about 20 pages on Login scripts, listing commands, variables and providing examples. Sadly in the NW6 Handbook all this is missing. It provides one paragraph of 6 lines explaining that login script operations can include variables and commands to map drives, execute programs and display messages. It is difficult to understand why then, Appendix B devotes some 17 odd pages to descriptions of Ethernet and Token ring cable types, topologies and physical characteristics, what drivers, switches, routers etc are and just for good measure one page to the OSI 7 layer model. Appendix A provides an eDirectory Reference describing the NDS processes and listing the DSTRACE switches, no doubt useful information but is it what you need in an administrators handbook. In my opinion the space given up to these appendices would have been better used providing more information to subjects more relevant to day-to-day administration, like login scripts. The majority of the information presented in the book is good and useful. There is a lot of new stuff in NetWare 6 and as the book says NetWare 6 completes a journey NetWare 5 started so may be the idea is the new book complements the old rather than replaces it. To summarise, the book is good, the NetWare5 Handbook was better.
