I currently work as a Web Developer and we use XML right from the VB COM level through to ASP and onto the Client Browser and manipulate the XML text file using XML DOM and Javascript to create interactive XML-based web solutions which make use of XSLT and CSS. So if you wish to implement this method then this book is not for you. However, if you want to learn about XML and what it is then this book is a great way of getting started. The book has 30 chapters. I found the first 25 particularly good. The chapters are divided into 6 sessions which are designed to be completed over 3 days (starting Friday evening). Each chapter took me about 20 mins to read, so I was well within the time suggested of 30 mins. This book is easy to read although it does assume that you have basic understanding of HTML. The summary and questions at the end of each chapter makes sure that you have learnt key points. I found the chapters on XML, XSLT and DTD really useful although the sections on XPath and Schema's did throw me a bit, but you can read the entire book over the weekend. I have managed to put a lot of the knowledge gained into practice, so if you are looking for a book where you can learn what XML is, then this book is for you, but if you wish to take XML to the next level and use it in conjunction with XML DOM and Javascript, then the book will only be useful as a reference guide as DOM is only briefly discussed at the end. "XML Programming with ASP and VB" would be a better choice. Comment Comment | Permalink | Was this review helpful to you? It is pretty well written and (mostly) clear and easy to understand. I think it would be more honest of the publisher to call it XML in 30 easy lessons. I'm not sure you could get through all the info in the time slots they allow (ie, don't expect to see your family, the TV, the shops etc for 48 hours), but even if you could, how much would you remember and be able to use come Monday morning? More examples might have been helpful and info on what happens when you get error messages (eg, The sort of Error Messages you are likely to Encounter in this Section are...) and how to deal with them would have been great. Despite my negative comments I think the book is a very good introduction to the subject and I would definitely consider buying others in the same series. My boss handed me 2 big-fat red WROX books; one on XML and the other on XSL (I won't even mention the other XSLT book too!) but they are far too daunting to read and I probably need a year to read them all! So I needed a book that could teach me the basics (quickly!). It assumes that you know basic HTML. There are 30 chapters but I found the first 25 really good. Each chapter took me about 20 mins to read, so I was well within the allocated time (30 mins). There are one or two minor typo errors in the examples, but they can be forgiven as the accompanying CD is excellent. The questions at the end of each section also ensure that you have learnt the key points. I bought 'XML in Easy Steps' too, but it was no where as detailed as this book. I recommend this book strongly if you want to learn about XML, XSLT, CSS, DTD, XML Schemas and DOM. The book is easy reading and key points are often repeated throughout the book.
