Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Perl is undoubtedly one of the most powerful programming languages available today, but it can also be one of the trickiest to master. Cross-Platform Perl, 2nd Edition, provides an extremely clear tutorial to some ways to use Perl effectively, both on Windows and Unix versions. With plenty of simple examples and a cut-to-the-chase presentation style, this book can put the powers of Perl within the reach of most anyone.

You can benefit from this book in at least two ways: first via a remarkably understandable tutorial for basic Perl, from basic syntax and language features (plus a nice explanation of regular expressions, which can be daunting for beginners). The secondary focus is on some powerful Perl modules (freely downloadable from CPAN and elsewhere) and simple code showing how to use them for common tasks, like launching and controlling applications, system administration and basic Web development. Better yet, Cross-Platform Perl shows how to do it under both Windows and Unix/Linux.

Later chapters explain using Perl on the Internet, with a tutorial for CGI and Web scripts, as well some excellent material on XML. Short, effective code examples are the rule, though several later chapters provide longer samples. The text closes with how to build client/server socket-based network programs and a quick introduction to graphical user interfaces built with Perl/Tk. The exceptionally clear writing style makes the whole even more accessible and a pleasure to read.

Whether you are a system administrator or aspiring Perl developer, Cross-Platform Perl, 2nd Edition shows you some of the best ways to use Perl on both Windows and Unix. This is a smart and extremely approachable book that will teach you how to use Perl effectively for a wide variety of common computing tasks. --Richard Dragan

2.0 out of 5 stars probably ok but install program on cd gave me much strife, 5 Feb 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Cross-platform Perl (Paperback)
I bought this book after reading the online reviews here, so thought I'd like to pass on my experience with it.

The book looks like it will serve my needs - an intro to perl for a non unix user who has experience of programming in other languages.

But the installation program for Perl 5 provided on the CD gave me a lot of trouble (on two Windows 95 machines). I think I managed to install perl on both machines eventually, but in each case I had 30 minutes of puzzlement and annoyance. The installation is done by a dos batch file which copies a couple of files then uses the perl interpreter to run the bulk of the installation script it contains which is actually written in perl.

I can't say for sure that the installation program is flawed or hasn't been tested properly (though I have my own view on the likelihood of that!) but here's a copy of the feedback I gave the book's publisher, which includes the action I needed to take to make the installation process run.

*********************

I've had problems installing perl from the book's CD onto a Windows 95 machine. I've tried the installation on my work and my home machines. In each case, the installation didn't work properly, and I only succeeded (I think) in getting it to work after delving into the install.bat program, part of which runs using Perl, so would be easier to debug after reading the book than just before you start.

On one machine, the installation only succeeded after I ran the command "perl.exe install.bat" after running install.bat, which failed at the perl part due to an error message which I've forgotten the details of. On the other machine, the installation produced the error message

cannot locate NT.ph in @INC

until I modified the part of the install.bat file written in perl, changing line 30 to

@INC = qw( Lib Lib.1 Ext );

i.e. adding the reference to Lib.1

Not very good going so far! As for the book, it looks better than the installation program.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Windows NT perl for win32, 27 Mar 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Cross-platform Perl (Paperback)
While there are plenty of good UNIX Perl books this is the first book I have seen that addresses the differences between Perl for UNIX and Perl for Windows NT clearly and definitively. The author not only describes both Win32 and OLE Automation Windows NT applications but supplies several good examples for each. Furthermore he dissects each piece of example code and highlights each method and function within the example. The examples, fortunately, are not code "fragments" but examples you can run immediately. The CD-Rom saves typing. I would have given the book a 10 but I would have liked to have seen more examples. All in all a good text you can pick up and use right away!
