Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
One issue that dampens enthusiasm for open-source products is a lack of mainstream documentation and tutorials written by professionals. PHP 4 Bible takes care of that little detail for PHP, the cross-platform (and free) server-side scripting language for the Web.

PHP 4 Bible is as comprehensive a discussion as you will find about this fascinating language, which can hold its own against commercial competitors like Microsoft Active Server Pages and Allaire ColdFusion. It covers the core elements of the language and its syntax with critical applications of PHP such as database access and XML integration. The chapters follow a traditional tutorial style, helpful to those new to PHP.

An introduction to the basic language constructs, control structures and functions leads off this book in a comfortable way for readers versed in other languages such as Visual Basic. Some very practical chapters, such as "Basic PHP Gotchas", help keep students out of trouble as they get their feet wet in PHP. For database access--a critical application of PHP in the real world--the focus is appropriately on MySQL, a simple cross-platform SQL database.

Plenty of code examples and a companion Web site with downloadable code fill this tutorial out nicely. It is a one-stop way to learn PHP inside and out. --Stephen W. Plain

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great book, 24 Jul 2001
I find really amazing to see this book with a lower rate than others . So, this is my experience: I'm a professional programmer; last december I had to start a new project based on PHP. I scanned all the titles on this subject I found on Amazon, and ordered a couple: this book (after the good experience with "XML Bible" from the same editor)and "Professional PHP" from Wrox. I started reading "PHP Bible" first, and since then I never left it : I've found all topics of the language very well covered, real world examples, and an impression of great competence about the authors. The book is up to date with PHP version 4 (i.e. new statements like "session",the new SQL statements, and so on), is a full 650 pages on the subject, is not focused only on managing MySQL, and is well printed. As a personal comparison, "Professional" has some tens of very unnecessary pages about Apache and its setup parameters, is written with discouraging little typographic characters, doesn't cover PHP 4. I have since then been up to date with PHP releases and news, and I don't see any reason to buy something newest: "Bible" is still my only reference book, where I have always found the examples I needed when I had some doubts. This is the book I would strongly suggest to anybody who wants or needs to learn PHP....

2.0 out of 5 stars This book is disappointing and not a good buy, 19 Jun 2001

I find it puzzling that this book gets such good reviews. Although it's fairly quick and easy to read through, there are very few useful examples of PHP applictions so you have little to work from when trying some coding yourself. 'Beginning PHP4' by Wrox publications is much better. I wish I'd bought that in the first place instead of wasting my money on this book

5.0 out of 5 stars This book was exactly what I was hoping for., 28 Feb 2001

When I ordered the PHP4 Bible I was hoping for a good all round introduction to PHP which would also include more advanced content. This book delivered all that and more. It is easy to use, well set out and has a good learning curve. It didn't leave me feeling baffled and was perfect for dipping in and out of as needed. There is a good section on databases which includes discussion about which database to choose and then goes on to focus on MySQL.

With the help of the PHP4 Bible, along with MySQL by Paul DuBois, I have actually managed to get my database driven web site up and running in less than a month - when I started I was completely new to PHP and MySQL.

This book starts at the beginner level and moves on to advanced techniques - perfect.
