2.0 out of 5 stars Not how I would have written it!, 20 April 2001
By jeremy.davey@broadvision.com (Near Oxford, England) - See all my reviews
This is how I look at it: you're an experienced programmer, looking to move into Palm programming. You almost certainly know C (and this book assumes that). You know programming. You just don't (yet) know PalmOS.

The problem with this book is that it takes over 900 pages to do what should have taken 200 at most. It starts really well, with a summary of the popular devices and their features. The usual Hello, World application is a good starter. After that Foster, unfortunately, loses his enthusiasm for good writing and just throws masses of text at you - the majority of which is simply superfluous!

The majority of the book is building a Librarian application - unfortunately it's not a very good example for the early material Foster has to present. Much better would have been a series of small applications.

If you want to learn PalmOS, you can do it with this book, plus a copy of Kernighan and Ritchie's The C Programming Language (now that's how a book whould be written!). But you're going to need some guidance on the more complex stuff - Mann and Rischpater's Advanced Palm Programming is a good set of tricks and techniques with some handly utilities. And you're going to need days to absorb all that text.

4.0 out of 5 stars better than the others.., 16 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This book covers some of the stuff that are missing, or only partially covered by the O'Reilly Palm Programming. As a beginner, I found it useful, but I think it may also be as good for more advanced programmers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best reference book, 29 May 2002
By Mr. Andrew Cooper - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is the best book I've seen for PalmOS programming. Sure, it has a lot of pages, but it does cover a lot of topics skipped by lesser tomes, and it has masses of source code.

Recommended reference material (but there is no need to read it from cover to cover)
