From the Author

Becoming a CNE doesn't have to be torture!
Let's face it, the CNE universe can be a little overwhelming. So, to ease the cyber-shock a touch, I've added some human elements to this CNE Study Guide: quotes, cartoons, stories, and case studies. It's amazing how much you can learn when learning is fun! Enjoy the show! :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars £55 to get me through 4 Novell exams -- a bargain., 21 Jun 1999
By A Customer
I bought the Novell press CNE study guide by David James Clarke purely as the basis for getting through the Novell exams as quickly as I possibly could and as such it provided the base from which I studied, along with a copy of "CNE quizzer" practice tests.

I managed to work my way through the whole of the book and pass the four exams that it covers in just over three weeks of my spare time. I think this fact, more than any other, speaks volumes for the quality of information the book contains and the ease with which the it can be read+understood.

The book covers material for four of Novell's core courses/exams, namely NW4.11 administration, NW4.11 advanced administration, NW4.11 implementation and design and NW4.11 installation and configuration.

All the material necessary for getting through the exams is covered, although not in any specific order, which is a bit annoying and in order to study properly for any exam, I found myself jumping from chapter to chapter to get the necessary information. However, the book does make up for this failing to some extent an appendix of material covered in the actual Novell courses is listed at the end of the book with relevant page references. This proved extremely useful.

The theory is clearly explained with helpful tips and diagrams throughout and no long-winded explanations of irrelevant pieces of information which has been a failing of other IT study guides I used in the past.

The author does try to lighten up the subject (and lets face it network design isn't the most fun subject) by regularly placing jokes or phrase from famous people in the text and I enjoyed these. However he also included "brain teaser" puzzles throughout the whole of the book, most of which I just ignored.

All in all a very good buy as it saw me through my first 4 Netware exams and this is after all, what the book was intended for. £55 for four exams worth - a bargain.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book if you know how to use it!, 26 Jul 1999
By A Customer
Mr. Clarke definitely knows his stuff when it comes to intranetware, but the book is about 600 pages of fluff. If you are looking to study the key points, use appendix B. It summarizes all the key points to the Novell Course Objectives and tells you what pages within the book to read. I strictly read these pages and bypassed all the 'fluff'. Using this method you should have no problem knocking out one exam a week.

5.0 out of 5 stars What's the measure of any great study tool?, 21 May 1999
By A Customer
I have used Mr. Clarke's guides exclusively (CNE stduy guide and Core Tech) and passed all seven tests in 3 months! What's the measure of a good study tool? The track record speaks for itself.
