I got this book to learn about discreet's Plasma and get a basic handle on using a 3D modelling and animation tool, and this book fulfilled that need perfectly. The introductory section about the use of 3D on the web is really good background information and lists a number of exciting sites to be inspired by.

My only gripe is that I've been using the demo software that's on the disk that comes with the book, and it only opens files of a special format, so I couldn't use the tutorial files or other files available on the web.

Another plus is that plasma's interface is very similar to 3D Studio Max, so it's fairly easy to transfer your skills to this high end package.

The book does cover some other software - Swift 3D in particular, and I may well investigate it's potential too. There's a brief, but complicated section on 3D in Director, but it's way too heavy on code.

Definitely recommend this if you're a Flash (or Director) designer, but a newcomer to 3D.
