Amazon.co.uk Review
Finally someone has written a book on animating in Flash. It's a wonder there aren't more like it. Flash 5 Cartooning covers the cartoon production cycle from a Flash artist's standpoint--drawing, writing, storyboarding, animating and keyframes. Sounds like a book on traditional animation, doesn't it? But everything is examined from a Flash perspective. When the book talks about drawing, it means drawing with a tablet. On keyframes and in-betweens, it is within Flash and not on paper that these issues are covered.

The book has two outstanding features: one, it's about making cartoons, not Flash. It just so happens that the tool of choice is Flash and the mode of distribution is the Web. Topics such as scripting (writing a cartoon story, not computer scripting), storyboarding, layout, camera moves and basic animation technique are well covered, as well as the Flash interface, how Flash works, how to compress media for faster downloading, basic HTML and other Flash and Web-specific topics.

The second great feature is the CD-ROM, which includes samples and material used in the chapters but above all contains a digital version of the book--not a stripped-down, bare-bones text version, but a full-colour, searchable version. Having a book like this at one's fingertips raises its usability rating through the roof.

Written in a clear, concise and light-hearted voice, the book spans 15 chapters. Every page has a handful of screen shots, and every page is in full colour. There were no shortcuts taken in either content or production value.

It's remarkable that there aren't more books like this. Sure, Flash is a great tool for all kinds of dynamic graphics and interactivity, but the Flash cartoon sites get a disproportionately high number of hits. Flash cartoons download fast, are often wonderfully creative and in most cases carry a strong sense of the artist who created them. This is what Flash and the Web have created--a venue for independent animators. Maybe cartoons still aren't taken seriously and that's why so little has been published on the topic; regardless, Flash 5 Cartooning excels in its class, not because the genre is such a niche, but because it is a terrific book. --Mike Caputo

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Flash Cartoonists, 20 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Mark Clarkson is a Flash cartoonist himself but In his book Mark Clarkson focuses on the needs of the reader.
He has planned the book well. At the beginning those who have a good grounding in Flash may think it too elementary for their needs. But it covers aspects of Flash which are important for cartoonists which are not covered so well in the Flash textbooks. If this is an easy book to use it is because the author has worked hard and conscientiously to make it so. He refers readers to the work of others whenever he can to provide the reader with a choice of solutions and styles. There is some ActionScript in the book which ahve have found very easy to use and adapt for my own work. This book became a friend. At the beginning I did not believe I would be producing my own work. I still have a lot to learn - all cartoonists have. But this book got me started and I am very grateful to Mark Clarkson for this book. The CD. with the book gives a variety of cartoon styles and help.

5.0 out of 5 stars You're not a flash cartoonist.. you can become it!, 17 May 2001
I am not a cartoonist, I'm just a Flash animator who needed to understand how to build a flash cartoon site starting from some drawings I received from the customer. This book gave me really important news about the world of cartoon, how to think, what to build, how to build it. All this using Flash and its tools.. great. I'm still not a cartoonist but now I can work with drawings and cartoon to obtain a great flash cartoon site!! Thank to this book.
