Amazon.co.uk Review
Joseph Lowerys Dreamweaver Bibles are well known as excellent in-depth guides. In
Dreamweaver UltraDev 4 Bible he tackles the high-end version of the product, which has integrated tools for building dynamic, data-driven Web sites. Everything in Dreamweaver is also in UltraDev, so it is not surprising to find material here that is familiar from the authors
Dreamweaver 4 Bible. However, the book has been fully reworked for UltraDev and many of the chapters are completely new. It is a chunky volume, with comprehensive treatment of every aspect of the product. Each chapter includes clear explanations, step-by-step directions where appropriate and plentiful screenshots. No prior knowledge is assumed and it is suitable for beginning to intermediate Web authors.
The first part of the book sets the scene, explaining installation and basic site configuration. Next, a guide to page layout with UltraDev, covering essentials like tables and frames. The third part focuses on dynamic data, including a valuable chapter on multi-page applications, showing how to use sessions and pass values between forms. Another part covers multimedia, including Flash and RealMedia. A section on extending UltraDev looks at e-commerce, custom objects and behaviours. The last sections explain layers, stylesheets, timeline animations and advanced site management including templates, libraries and team work.
For those wanting a title covering the whole UltraDev package, from basic Web authoring through to online dynamic data, this is a great choice. The only caveat is that including all the general material limits the space available for UltraDev-specific guidance. --Tim Anderson
